80’s prep

with all this recent talk about spring and summer music festivals, i’ve started thinking about casual cool outfits for you know, like, fun in the sun and stuff. so while i’m not going to be spending my weekend at coachella i know a lot about dressing for that type of weather since i’m a native to those parts. to be exact, i’m from redlands, which is about an hour inland from los angeles. and if you drive for another hour east, you’ll find yourself in palm springs. in the summer months, it easily gets up to 115 degrees and hotter, so i know all about staying cool in the dry dessert heat. (also, redlands is actually a really spectacular city with incredible victorian architecture and historic buildings, but that’s for another blog post!)anyway, for some reason, whenever i think of dressing for the heat, i think of these types of preppy 80’s looks. perhaps because i’m familiar with the resort and retirement communities out in the desert, i always think of upturned collars on pale pastel blouses to wear while sipping lemonade and playing a round of tennis. last year, i would have sported this same look in a pair of perfectly destroyed denim cut offs, but this year it feels much more fresh to wear a cleaner look with an actual hem or rolled cuffs.

  1. I'm seriously, SERIOUSLY loving those oxfords. And I think "preppy cool" is just the thing for a hot desert day. Love those glasses!

  2. very cute! I especially like the bright colors against the black shorts. You're from redlands! that's like an hour away from where I live ~,^

  3. that is so hot! i've never experienced dry heat though. i get whacked with a wave of humidity all summer. it's unbearable!

  4. I love this clean, preppy look. Those glasses are very unusual, but in a good way. I've never been to Redlands; maybe I should check it out–I love historic sites!

  5. The touch of red with the bag is the perfect splash of color here. This is a great throw on and be in the sun outfit.

  6. Try to stay cool. I saw so many people faint at Cochella the 2005…I think it was one of the worst years for heat.

P.S. Can't wait to dress you in my clothes!

  7. i like wearing prim tops with shorts — i feel like my mother approves more of that look, lol.

also, i too am jealous of your shoes!

  8. This look so so adorable. I love how you make casual outfits look so chic! Thanks Erin for all the tips on finding leather goods in the Bay Area. I really appreciate it. Love your 3.1 Phillip Lim glasses!

  9. You pull this look off so well. You tottaly remind me of a 1980's golf club babe – I love it. You look too cool for school as always. I need to rock a polo soon, just for the hell of it. In honor of you, 90210 girl.

  10. I love the 80s prep look–it reminds me of "Pretty in Pink," and that is always a good thing. :D This is great. Love the stripes and the colors.

  11. hey! glad to see the bag paired with such a cute outfit! i'm also curious about the "gainsville green" nail polish! that's my hometown, homie..

  12. I live in Texas so we always have to dress for the heat (except for the few months of winter). Yours is a lot cuter and more comfortable than the Texas version, though!
