grand lake

considering the nautical theme of my outfit today, i thought the lake would be a very fitting spot for photos. i’m always surprised that i don’t take pictures at lake merritt more often, considering that this is about 5 blocks from where i live. it’s a hot spot for joggers, since the perimeter is a little over 3 miles long. and on this particular day, we discovered that people still go rollerblading as well. i hadn’t seen someone on rollerblades since i got a pair for christmas when i was 10! anyway, even though i thought they looked pretty silly, i myself felt pretty awkward snapping pictures out in public. it was actually my most public photo session to date, and i was quite proud of myself for managing to get as many shots as i did, seeing as how i get incredibly embarrassed when people are watching.

so today i am wearing one of my favorite summer uniforms. a cute belted dress, a cardigan for layering, platform wedges, and a straw hat. it’s a relatively simple formula, but it can always look completely different given the choice of colors, patterns, proportions, and accessories. i particularly love this dress because i know it’s going to be a very versatile part of my wardrobe. the soft and thin jersey knit is beyond comfortable. today i dressed it up a bit, but it could also double as a casual beach cover up with a simple pair of flat sandals. and well, the super short length will come in handy when the weather finally gets hot. and it was something that particularly appealed to my boyfriend. i certainly don’t dress for him, but it’s always entertaining to see what he likes, even if it isn’t very surprising! haha!

  1. I think it is ok to dress for your boyfriend (sometimes) epesh if you know they particularly like to see you in something! Really, really like the nautical vibe and rope belt! You look charming x

  2. I love the pink and the red together. And good for you taking your photos. It's a real challenge to take your own shots.

  3. Those colors are perfect on you. Love the fun rope belt. Lake Merritt makes a good back drop — I learned to sail on LM.

  4. hey! we rollerblade sometimes in buffalo! i swear, it's strictly for fitness. LOLOLOL.

and wooo on the shortness of that dress. i remember laughing a little because when you showed off your chest on a hot weekend you thought that was sexier than all the leg you usually show! :D you look great, and is that your new kitten tattoo i spy on your thigh? (outer?)

  5. lisa: ha! SO TRUE. but you'd be surprised at how often people comment on how 'modest' i dress even though i love to wear suuuper short skirts ALL OF THE TIME.

  6. The rope really brings this whole outfit together. Love the nautical-ness. My boyfriend is the same way, and I too don't dress for him. However he's made it very clear that he doesn't like the pleated trousers that are so popular right now because they are "too baggy" haha

  7. i love that you kept the colour palate simple, i would have been tempted to mix it up but it looks so much better this way! oh that hat is to die for. lookin so gorgeous as always!

  8. learning to sail on Lake Merritt is one of my goals for the summer. I've been trying to convince my boy to take the classes with me but i may have to go solo. We also just took photos for my blog in almost he exact location while picnicking there after a trip to Laney Flea.

    Love the outfit!

  10. Definitely love the nautical theme here and this is the perfect setting! Is the weather nice in the East Bay? It's seriously and severely cold over here… ughhhh… Love how you matched that coral pink with dark red :)

  11. love the pink stripes! makes for a cool twist on the normal nautical look. and i totally know what you mean about short dresses/skirts, my husband loves when i wear them short :)

  12. I love the rope belt! Such a great idea!

Just got my flat (j crew, haha) espadrilles in the mail. Quite nice! I had the HARDEST time finding summer sandals, and finally I just decided to go with a summer classic.

  13. I am so jealous of your belt.

You look to me like you should be on one of those little boats (gondola?) in venice. :)

  14. I can see why your boyfriend would like your dress, it's smokin' hot! And also very girly and pretty. You look awesome. :D

  15. You look great, wouldn't have thought to pair red with the coral/pink but it seriously compliments each other so well.

  16. I love the combination of coral and red, and thanks for the link to the J.Crew espadrilles; I've been eying those shoes of yours! hehe.

It is embarrassing posing in public, isn't it? I'm certainly no model, so I always feel strange doing outfit shoots while people are staring. Your photos turned out beautifully, though! (You always post such great shots!)

  17. So that's what Lake Merritt looks like? I've only ever been to the BART station, which is underground, so I imagine water softly dripping from the walls and algae growing from the ceiling.

  18. i love lake lake merritt. you look amazing. you always look so cute in that straw boater hat. and your striped mini-dress and rope belt are the best.

  19. I love your outfit I have as of yet to take a any ooutfit pics in a veryt public place I don't like it when people look when we're taking pics.

  20. Great outfit! Rollerblading is definitely coming back. I've seen a few people on their blades here in Manchester.
