hawaii photo diary, day two

as you read this post, i will be on a plane flying across the pacific ocean on my way to hawaii! i know, i know, it’s exactly the place i went last summer on vacation, but now that i’ve been there, i think i might be hooked. this time i’ll be staying about an hour outside of honolulu to get a taste of what it’s like in oahu. just like my last visit (on the big island), i haven’t done much in the way of planning, so i would absolutely love your suggestions on places that i must visit while i’m there. good restaurants, sandy beaches, antique stores, hidden treasures! i’m open to any and all suggestions!

  7. Oh how fun! Kev and I lived outside of honolulu. Such a great island. I’d love to know what area you are staying in. Email me if you want any tips of things to do or places to go that aren’t super touristy! Hope you have the most wonderful time!

  8. Have fun! Be sure to check out a place called “The Blowhole” and snorkel nearby. Bring frozen peas or corn; the fish know that they can get a meal here and will swim all around you/eat from your hands. It’s a fairly popular place so just ask around. Also, get pizza from a hole in the wall called Big Kahunas Pizza. Seriously the best you will ever have. Waimea Beach has gorgeous crystal clear water and a huge rock that folks (bravely) jump off. Go to a Luau! It’s cheesy but you’ll have a great time anyways. Happy to make more suggestions; I moved away years ago but miss it!

  13. I’m heading to Oahu with my family at the end of April. We’re staying in Kailua, which is my mom’s hometown and also home to one of the nicest beaches on the island (Kailua and Lanikai). It’s been years since I’ve been there but it has a rep for being uncrowded and totally beautiful.

  14. I second the suggestion of going to Kailua and Lanikai! Two of the nicest beaches you could ever find. It’s getting a little more crowded than in years past, but it’s still a mostly locals spot. Hit up Buzz’s steakhouse across the street from Kailua beach park when you’re there, and Kalapawai Market at the end of the beach park has great coffee to take on a morning stroll along the beach :)

  15. You gotta do at least a few touristy things! Check out Waimea Bay and climb Diamond Head or Koko Head. Pearl Harbor is also sad but interesting if you’re into historic sites. The Tropical Farms macadamia nut farm is a total tourist trap but it’s actually fun. You can do a tour there or just stop by for free coffee and nuts on your way to the North Shore.

    For food check out JJ Dolan’s (great pizza and beer!), Cafe Maharani (amazing Indian food!), and Diamond Head Market and Grill has the best desserts ever. You should also check out this local TV show called Eh, U Da Kine Ah. I’m sure you can find some of their recommendations online. They review local food and restaurants. I don’t eat meat so I didn’t go to a lot of the places they recommend but my foodie bff who lives in Honolulu agrees with almost all of their picks.

  16. Fun! North Shore Shark adventure was soooo much fun. Sounds scary, and it is at first but the sharks don’t want anything to do with you. This was my favorite thing we did. AND Matsumoto (shaved ice) in Haleiwa.
