sammich cake

calivintage: smörgåstårta

no, your eyes are not deceiving you. this is a food post on a fashion blog. please don’t roll your eyes too much because i am quite proud of my latest creation! as i’m sure some of you know, i work for modcloth.com as an editorial specialist. this basically means that in addition to writing posts for the blog, i run the modcloth tumblr and instagram, and generally produce editorial content for the site. i also do most of the blog photography and even recently shot some campaign photos. it’s basically a really fun, creative job where i get to dabble in all sorts of different projects. after hesitating for over two years, i finally decided to try my hand at a cooking post. and this is what was born: it’s a sammich cake! also known as a smörgåstårta. i made it and took the photos at my friend’s house and now i feel like i’ve been bitten by the food blogging bug.

anyway, i originally posted this on the modcloth blog (where you can find my recipe), but i just had to share the photos here because i was so pleased with my first attempt, and wondered what you guys thought. little known fact: many moons ago, i was professionally trained in culinary school and am actually a certified pastry chef. i’ve never shared any of my work here because it’s a fashion blog, but perhaps you’d like to see what else i’ve got up my sleeve?

  1. Oh, Erin. Some days you just really do make me so happy. And I for one would love to see more food posts. I always thought that the pastry chef thing was interesting – I’ve come across several fashion bloggers with the same background now. I wonder if there is some kind of creative element to it that pulls from the same place as fashion experimentation. I suppose in some ways cooking style and sartorial style may be quite closely related.

    1. ah, how interesting! i think you’re right that there is a creative element. i have always been more artistically inclined, so i think i went for culinary school because it felt like a more practical way to use my creativity. i mostly decorated cakes (lots of weddings) and made cute little pastries. it was definitely fulfilling, but not as lucrative as i had hoped… but yes, i suppose fashion and food are much more related than meets the eye!

  2. that looks incredible! and loved hearing about your background in pastry chef-ery! can’t believe you’ve never mentioned that, but understand how the ‘fashion blog’ aspect can sometimes dictate what you share :)

    1. haha, yes, it’s funny how that works. i sometimes forget how little i actually share here, and it’s always this silly moment of enlightenment when i realize that people might be interested in more than just outfits!

  3. You continue to do a beautiful job of building a cohesive fashion blog that never seems dull- however, it is ALWAYS super interesting to see the many talented sides of an individual person….which are usually more related than one might think. A certified pastry chef!! How cool is that?! Perhaps it’s building steam with our generation but I know many women who are well-rounded and versed in various fields. (I am a: painter, jewelry designer, floral designer, furniture up-grader & graphic designer…and that’s not counting hobbies…heh) Thanks for sharing a new view to calivintage.! Beautiful photos + I cannot wait to try the recipe!

  4. hellz to the yeah! we love the fashion stuff you post, but we love it because it expresses your aesthetic and view. I’m 100% sure that almost everyone that loves your blog will love everything you’re passionate about, share away!

  5. Oh dear goodness, a pastry chef *_*
OF COURSE I’d love to see more, Erin!! It would be a real treat to find more recipes here, this one looks delicious. And not to mention the photography: when it manages to make you hungry, it means it’s really good! In fact I’m heading towards the kitchen right now, even at 11pm… and after a gelato… see? You made me hungry! Congratulations on your first yummy post!
    Ale
