outfit: 90s dad

calivintage: 90s dad

perhaps it has to do with that fact that we’re currently in the midst of men’s fashion week, but for whatever reason, i’ve been digging the menswear lately. yesterday i wrote about p. johnson tailors and today i’m dressed (kinda) like a dude. i call it my dad outfit, so it was pretty appropriate that when i asked brendan if i fit the bill, he said i looked like chevy chase. especially since my idea of what a dad looks like is mostly some weird amalgamation of my own dad and dads i’ve seen in goofy 90s movies. personally i think i look a bit more like rick moranis. either way, the look definitely called for a pair of high rise pleated khaki shorts, which i hadn’t worn in almost two years! for some reason, over the past couple of years, i’ve really shied away from shorts. something about those itsy bitsy inseams makes me feel a bit overexposed, which is rather silly when you consider the length of most of my skirts (see monday’s post). so with a bit of encouragement from my coworkers who razzed me when i told them that i don’t like shorts, i decided to pull this pair out from the depths of my closet. last time i wore them was here and here. perhaps it’s time for a bit of a shorts revival! and a 90s movie marathon!

i know that i very infrequently post about menswear. in fact, the last time i shared a men’s clothing line was back in 2010 when i discovered this hilarious lookbook by freeman’s sporting goods. but every once in a while, a very creative lookbook catches my eye. such was that case when i recently came across this amazing collection of photos by p.johnson tailors while visiting les yeux sans visage. i may not know a ton about menswear, but all of the pieces look impeccable and of course, i’m a sucker for those amazing masks, which i assume are at least inspired by el güegüense, if not actually procured from nicaragua. gotta love a good sense of humor, especially when it comes to something like mens tailoring, which has a bit of a reputation for being quite a serious undertaking.

bro time

calivintage: bro time

the whole time i was in redlands, i made my little brother devin take my outfit photos for the blog, so it only seemed fitting that we reversed roles on my last day there and i snapped a few photos of his outfit. he was proudly wearing two of his prized christmas gifts, a pair of green dr. martens and a nice new cpo jacket. while i was there, we talked a lot about clothes and even spent a day checking out menswear boutiques in la. i don’t know a ton about menswear, so it was interesting to observe. since there really are less options style-wise, there’s a much bigger focus on quality and fit than you typically see in women’s clothing. it stood as a nice reminder to focus on quality and craftsmanship. case in point, he may be wearing some simple basics, but they’re all very solid pieces meant to last a very long time. anyway, these photos were taken in my grandmother’s back yard. my brother is a bit serious, but i still managed to get him to do a “calivintage” jump for me, haha!

oh, so many fun things to share today! first i will address the obvious: look who is making his first full-fledged appearance on the blog! it’s my partner in crime and patient photographer, brendan. he is actually quite the fashionable male, but generally prefers to stay out of the limelight over here at calivintage. but when swedish hasbeens contacted me to share the news about their new contest, the mister got excited and offered to model his very own pair of unisex swedish hasbeens from their fall 2011 collection.

and now onto the part where you can win stuff: swedish hasbeens is hosting a fun contest to celebrate their new unisex collection, and to support the idea of equality between men and women. simply snap a creative photo of you and a friend (could be your boyfriend, your girlfriend, your brother, whoever) that represents your version of unisex and you’ll be entered to win a pair of swedish hasbeens from their fall 2011 collection for yourself and your friend! one winner will be chosen based on the number of votes they receive and another winner will be chosen by the swedish hasbeens team based on creativity! you can enter and read all of the rules here! so get to it!

today is an extra special outfit post because you get two for the price of one! that’s right, my brother and i planned a little shoot together while i was visiting my hometown over the holiday weekend. we’re in front of my grandmother’s old house on the stoop where we’ve spent so many summer afternoons since we were little kids. and this is what we wore on a sweltering sunday to beat the 104 degree heat. on days like this, the philosophy of “less is more” most definitely rings true. one more layer or even slightly heavier fabric would make the weather pretty much unbearable.

we were both in desperate need of some new frames, so my sponsor bonlook, generously let us pick out some new glasses for the occasion. and when an outfit is simple like this, it’s the perfect opportunity to accessorize with a pair of statement glasses. i’m thanking my lucky stars to have discovered them because their $99 price tag certainly beats the $400+ i spent on my last pair. in fact, i’ve already got my eye on a couple more styles to mix and match with different outfits.

i am wearing…
top: j.crew racerback tank
skirt: asos
shoes: kork ease teresa sandals
bag: j.w. hulme mini legacy bag
lipstick: ysl fard a levres rouge pur in rosy coral
glasses: bonlook simply fabulous in brown

on my brother…

shoes: alden indy work boots

for the boys: my brother’s outfit

calivintage: devin
bonus round! yesterday i told you that i was only able to document one of my outfits while on vacation in southern california last week.  but i was able to get another outfit post… of my little brother, devin!  ok, so maybe he’s not so little anymore, but he will always be my little bro, even if he is all grown up.  and i just had to share one of his outfits with you because he really is a rather dapper gentleman, don’t you think?  i like that it’s a casual outfit with refined basics that’s deliberate, but not over-styled.  we actually email each other back and forth and discuss menswear at length.  he even has a secret website where he keeps a visual catalog of all his favorite pieces.  i keep trying to convince him to make it public or start his own blog!
anyway, i may have gotten a bit carried away snapping lots of photos, but it was kinda fun to be the person behind the camera for a change.  and i really enjoyed capturing the suburban landscape of the town where i grew up.  this particular location is the 1950’s apartment complex where my dad lives.  note the foliage: lots of succulents and orange trees.

freemans sporting club

i don’t normally post about men’s fashion on here, but after seeing the freemans sporting club fall winter lookbook, i just had to share it with you.  i was instantly delighted by the hilarious scenarios, alternating between silly outdoor activities and urban adventures.  the ridiculous props and over-the-top styling pretty much seal the deal.  also: i can’t stop laughing at his silly frown in that first picture!  i kinda just want to have all of these pictures framed to hang in my apartment.
anyway, i had never even heard of them before (probably because i don’t really buy men’s clothing), but now i’m kind of obsessed.  they are based out of new york and all of their clothes are made in the usa, which i can definitely get behind.
