isn’t this always the way it goes? the moment the weather gets crazy nice (read: 70 degrees and up in february), i come down with a cold that just won’t quit. but when you get sick with this damn virus, there’s not much you can do but wait it out. so i’ve been making the best of it by alternating between long naps and short stints outside to enjoy the warm weather. i bought this little sailor blouse a number of weeks ago with the intent of taking it with me on my upcoming trip to hawaii, but i got lucky and had the opportunity to take it for a spin just the other day. i occasionally like to mix things up and try new silhouettes and things, so i opted to pair it with some high rise trousers that are admittedly veering into harem pants territory, but i still enjoyed the overall effect. i wasn’t intentionally doing it, but i feel like these shapes are very ’90s. perhaps something that would have been sported by courtney cox or jennifer aniston circa friends. add the trench coat for some pink panther spy action and you’ve got my outfit.

p.s. are you loving my blue steel in that first photo? not sure what was going on there… i’ll just blame the cold meds and keep on enjoying this strange february sun!

today i stayed home sick from work. it’s just a cold, but it seriously won’t quit! so i thought i might share one of my more casual and cozy looks appropriate for those days when you’re feeling just slightly under the weather, but not completely out of commission. it also happens to be the outfit i wore on the plane ride home from nyc, which is probably where i contracted this nasty little bug.

in other news, i’ve been obsessed with these sepia tones lately. these pants are pretty much the perfect color. almost the same as my favorite color in the jumbo box of crayola colors: burnt sienna. i kid you not, that was my favorite crayon as a kid.

i’m sure you’ve heard me talk a lot about uniforms. i usually fall into a pattern of dressing in a handful of different combinations at any given point. this fall, it’s been all about the button-up shirt. either layered beneath a sweater and a jacket with jeans or a skirt, or worn beneath a little pinafore or jumper with tights and a coat. the look i’m sharing today is definitely an old standby for me. i just switch out the pieces for different colors, patterns, and textures. case in point: this look which is almost identical but with slightly different proportions and patterns. i think it’s kinda funny how i swing back and forth between these almost boyish casual looks and very cute and feminine ’60s-inspired mini dresses. but i suppose those are just the two moods i feel the most!

anyway, this is what i wore on sunday to drive down the peninsula to visit brendan’s family for a belated birthday party. we went shopping at the stanford mall (where i found an awesome pair of high rise jeans in a beautiful terra cotta color), and enjoyed home-made ice cream cake and chocolate coffee to celebrate!

perhaps it has to do with that fact that we’re currently in the midst of men’s fashion week, but for whatever reason, i’ve been digging the menswear lately. yesterday i wrote about p. johnson tailors and today i’m dressed (kinda) like a dude. i call it my dad outfit, so it was pretty appropriate that when i asked brendan if i fit the bill, he said i looked like chevy chase. especially since my idea of what a dad looks like is mostly some weird amalgamation of my own dad and dads i’ve seen in goofy 90s movies. personally i think i look a bit more like rick moranis. either way, the look definitely called for a pair of high rise pleated khaki shorts, which i hadn’t worn in almost two years! for some reason, over the past couple of years, i’ve really shied away from shorts. something about those itsy bitsy inseams makes me feel a bit overexposed, which is rather silly when you consider the length of most of my skirts (see monday’s post). so with a bit of encouragement from my coworkers who razzed me when i told them that i don’t like shorts, i decided to pull this pair out from the depths of my closet. last time i wore them was here and here. perhaps it’s time for a bit of a shorts revival! and a 90s movie marathon!

outfit: a new year

calivintage: a new year

this is my first outfit of 2012 and my last set out outfit photos taken while on my visit to redlands. as you read this, i’m probably somewhere along interstate 5 on the seven hour drive back up to oakland getting ready to transition back into the working world. i have to admit, i’m pretty sad to be leaving and in some way, i almost wish i never had to leave sunny southern california. as much as i love oakland and san francisco, something about the view of the san bernardino mountains to the north and the big stretches of desert to the east just call to me… i lived here for the first 18 years of my life, and can’t help but be hit with intense waves of nostalgia when i’m here. it seems like i’ll always feel homesick when i leave this place, even if i have been calling the bay area my home for over 10 years now.

but as hard as it is to say goodbye to family, i have to get back to work! and i certainly won’t mind arriving home to my little apartment with a pretty view of the hillside and of downtown oakland with my little kitty friend waiting to greet me. and it will be nice to be able to walk into my closet to get dressed in the morning instead of living out of a suitcase. and i can cook a healthy meal in my new le creuset pot (thanks, brendan!) and sleep in a comfy bed with the one that i love. and hopefully 2012 will be as kind to me as 2011 was, and i can’t wait for all of the exciting things i already have planned in just the first week of the year alone!

outfit: olive ave.

despite that fact that i packed for the winter, the weather here in redlands has been unseasonably warm, even for southern california! it’s fun to see everyone (myself included) walking around in their new jackets and sweaters looking a bit uncomfortable discovering that the weather doesn’t really require quite so many layers. so i decided to shed a few of my own layers and opted to prance around in a very mini skirt with my fancy new pink polka dot shirt!

i went for a little walk on olive ave to admire the cool old craftsman and victorian style homes and palm tree lined streets. we didn’t really capture them in this set of photos, but redlands has some of the most amazing historical buildings. it’s the type of place where you can just drive (or bike) around for hours admiring all of the interesting architecture.

with the holidays upon us, things have been just a little bit crazy around here! as soon as i finish writing this post, i’m jumping in the car to make the 7 hour drive to my hometown of redlands, ca where i’ll be visiting with family and working from the los angeles office for the next couple of weeks. it’s not quite a vacation because i’ll still be working, but it will be nice to have a change of setting and to be able to see my family when i get home at the end of the day. and i’m super excited to sit around the kitchen table with my grandma, mom, aunt, and sister to make tamales for christmas! yum!

but before i head out, i wanted to share part two of my series of outfits that i styled for ralph lauren denim & supply (you can see the first look here). these photos were shot on a sunny, albeit deceptively chilly, weekend afternoon. me and the boy headed over to blue bottle cafe in the jack london area of oakland for a nice hot cup of coffee and a stroll around the neighborhood. it’s an interesting mix of old buildings, some that have fallen by the wayside, and others that have been resurrected in the form of cool restaurants and fancy lofts. i like walking around and seeing the way the area has changed even in just the past 5 years that i’ve lived here. as we strolled around talking about nothing in particular, we could see the light bouncing off the side of this old brick building from a few blocks away and knew it would be a nice spot to hang out and goof off while drinking our coffee and enjoying the last of the light on a nice weekend day.

today i’m excited to share a fun little series that i’ve been working on with ralph lauren denim & supply. you wouldn’t believe my excitement when they asked me if i’d be interested in styling three looks from their new collection! pretty exciting stuff! they had so much stuff to choose from, that it was actually a challenge to narrow it down to only three looks! for my first outfit, i opted to go for a very nautical look built around this pretty much perfect sailor stripe shirt. over the years, i’ve picked up a number of different striped shirts, but i’ve had a hard time finding one that fits exactly the way i want. it’s funny how such a simple item can be so difficult to find, but when i got this shirt in the mail, it was love at first sight. if you are still on the hunt for one like this, i highly recommend it.

anyway, there are a few more photos than usual because the weather was just so nice out and we were having a bit too much fun playing with the light as the sun set behind the oakland high rises near lake merritt. i love this spot because it’s such an interesting contrast between the urban setting to the west and such a lovely natural estuary to the east with pretty migratory birds floating around in the evening sky.

remember the other day when i was dreaming about laying around the house in my pajamas, drinking hot cocoa, and taking naps? well, i finally got some well-needed rest both on thanksgiving day itself, and this past weekend. while the rest of the world was out shopping, i was taking it easy. this is not to say that i did nothing, but it was nice to chill out without any particular plans or obligations. on saturday, i was still craving mashed potatoes, so me and the boy took a little stroll to the grocery store to buy the ingredients for a shepherd’s pie, which we promptly enjoyed with a glass of wine watching television on the couch.

as far as getting dressed was concerned, i decided to continue on with my fall color palette and pulled out this old vintage skirt from the depths of my closet. the wide pleats and front pockets were giving me some serious schoolgirl vibes, so i decided to run with it and add a button-up shirt, my new toggle coat, and over the knee socks. it made me feel like a 1960s school girl on the set of some creepy horror film.

dude. is anyone else super stoked about the fact that tomorrow is basically a day that you get off work so you can eat a bunch and chill out? i know i am. it’s been a super stressful past couple of weeks for me, and i need to decompress! badly. i seriously just want to lay around in my pajamas for like a week straight and just drink hot cocoa and take naps and read a book or something. i’m sure you know the feeling!
