calivintage: weekend wear

a few weeks back, i mentioned that my fall uniform had already taken shape in the form of endless combinations of pinafores and jumpers with an assortment of different blouses. while i have been sporting that particular look quite frequently, this combination of jeans with a button up shirt, sweater, and coat, has also become an important standby in my wardrobe, especially as the weather gets chilly. i’m certainly not giving up on my habit of collecting cute little dresses, but this type of look is just so classic and easy to wear that i can already see myself coming back to it on lazy weekend days or during the week when i get a late start and don’t feel like going to the trouble of getting ‘all dolled up.’

in other news, i finally got my hairs trimmed! not sure if you noticed, but my bangs were starting to obstruct my view, so i finally got off my lazy ass and made a visit to see shannon at revamp salon in sf. he undercut the bob to add a bit of texture, which is especially nice because my hair is so pin straight that it’s usually kinda hard to get it to do anything other than lay completely flat. so yay for bed-head and lazy weekend days!

outfit: redlands pride

calivintage: redlands pride

oh hello. i’m in redlands! i’m going to be working from los angeles all week, so i decided to come to town early this weekend to visit with family. these photos were taken by my brother after i woke up from a bbq induced coma yesterday afternoon, as we kicked around in my grandma’s backyard and around the neighborhood. i had originally purchased this marc by marc jacobs skirt with the intention of layering it up for cool weather, and was saving it in my closet for the perfect fall day. but when i was packing for my trip and i discovered that the highs would be reaching the 90s during my visit here, i realized that i would have to find a way to wear it for the “summer.”

i like that i ended up pairing it with an orange top while hanging out in redlands, since this little old town is known for it’s orange groves. well, at least it used to be back in the day. even my childhood home was surrounded by orange groves, but by now, most of them have been replaced by housing subdivisions. but it’s still nice to hold onto those memories of hot summer days with the smell of orange blossoms thick in the air…

outfit: tecumseh valley

calivintage: tecumseh valley

as the sun began to set on our usual weekend walk around the neighborhood, brendan commented that he loves the autumn light. we looked up at the world around us and tried to observe just what makes it so different (and beautiful) in the fall. the air feels crisp and while the leaves certainly don’t display as many colors as they do on the east coast, they still add just a bit of depth and dimension to the landscape. and i love the light so much at this time of day, that of course, it was the perfect place to catch a few photos of my weekend wear.

i first saw this skirt back in february during a visit to the lauren moffatt studio. she pulled it out from the rack and chuckled that the inspiration for the collection was kinda like laura ingalls wilder on acid. i fell in love with the pretty, saturated colors on the spot, so of course, when the collection finally came out, i had to have it. it’s named after the song ‘tecumseh valley’ by towne’s van zandt, so i listened to the song as i got dressed, twirling around in the silk fabric paired with a cozy little sweater. the mixture of light and sound and fabric has certainly got me feeling like it’s fall in california.

pink pants party

calivintage: pink pants

i was especially busy this weekend shooting street style at the outside lands festival, but before all the madness began, this is one of the outfits i wore to go out for breakfast with the boy. and i’m wearing pink pants! they make me feel like beck from his album midnight vultures. an awesome album, for sure, but when you open the cd there is a glorious photo of beck in a pair of bright pink pants that made my teenage heart melt. so when j brand recently contacted me and asked if i’d like to pick a pair of jeans from their haute hues collection, you had better bet i went straight for the 811 in fuchsia!

when i first got them in the mail, i was a little uncertain if i’d be able to pull off such a bright pair of pants, but i’ve actually already worn them several times. the go to outfit usually includes a breton stripe shirt, simple pumps, and a pair of cat eye glasses. but today i thought i’d add a bit more color with this mustard cardigan, and i anchored it together with a cream shirt and simple brown accessories. definitely an eye catching color combination that’s fun to wear on a sunny afternoon.

four eyes

calivintage: bonlook

today is an extra special outfit post because you get two for the price of one! that’s right, my brother and i planned a little shoot together while i was visiting my hometown over the holiday weekend. we’re in front of my grandmother’s old house on the stoop where we’ve spent so many summer afternoons since we were little kids. and this is what we wore on a sweltering sunday to beat the 104 degree heat. on days like this, the philosophy of “less is more” most definitely rings true. one more layer or even slightly heavier fabric would make the weather pretty much unbearable.

we were both in desperate need of some new frames, so my sponsor bonlook, generously let us pick out some new glasses for the occasion. and when an outfit is simple like this, it’s the perfect opportunity to accessorize with a pair of statement glasses. i’m thanking my lucky stars to have discovered them because their $99 price tag certainly beats the $400+ i spent on my last pair. in fact, i’ve already got my eye on a couple more styles to mix and match with different outfits.

hand across the water

calivintage: hand across the water

and the summer is here! this was the first weekend of the year that i could actually call hot. as in, so hot i wish i had a swimming pool and so hot that it’s basically impossible to stay inside of my sweltering apartment. and of course, i celebrated by wearing yet another sailor-inspired piece of clothing! i swear, half of my summer wardrobe revolves around the sailor motif. anyway, this is actually one of the outfits i wore for my bike video, riding around lake merritt near my house (except i wore flats). it was such a pleasant day that of course half the city was hanging around the water, sitting in the grass, and enjoying the weather.

a very blustery day

calivintage: a very blustery day

that’s right, it finally happened. after weeks of resisting, i finally had to say goodbye to bare legs and pull out a pair of tights. i actually wore a very similar version of this outfit back in february, but back then, the weather was nicer than it is now! i was wearing orange and yellow with this fresh enthusiasm for springtime weather, but this is san francisco, so it’s been raining for like a week straight, meaning that my wardrobe had suddenly started to resemble the sky. can you tell i’m getting sick of the rain? haha!

the basics

calivintage: the basics

a couple weeks ago, i realized that i didn’t have a classic white button front shirt. i kinda don’t know how i went for so long without one in my wardrobe, though i have a sneaking suspicion that it’s leftover from the days when i had a job that required me to wear light colored dress shirts and slacks everyday. i guess i just found myself averse to the idea of business attire. it’s funny how a uniform can affect the way you dress when you’re off work. the same thing happened when i worked as a cake decorator in a bakery… i would spend all of my time in beat up jeans and t-shirts, so when i got off work, i would immediately run to the closet to throw on a fancy dress. and you know what? now that i think of it, i don’t have a good basic t-shirt in my wardrobe either! perhaps it’s time to stock up on some more basics…

sailor style

calivintage: sailor style

oh hello there! on monday, i got a few comments from people asking to get a better look at my sailor trench. fortunately, with the neverending rain we’ve been having, it’s come in handy and i’ve already worn it a few times this past week. so here it is again! today i was especially pleased to be wearing it when my new (to me) vintage straw hat came in the mail. i didn’t plan it, but i feel like the hat actually completed my little sailor look! and if there’s one thing i love about dressing for the spring, it’s straw hats! last year, i wore my vintage boater hat to death, so this year i decided to upgrade to a wider brim. i like how just small changes like that seem to make things feel fresh again.

too bad the wind didn’t agree with me… looks like i’ll need to go on a little hunt for some new hat pins to keep it in place!
