onto my outfit from day two here at new york fashion week. this is what i wore yesterday for another fun day. in the morning, i went to the rachel antonoff show to shoot behind-the-scenes video and interview rachel herself, the hair and makeup artists, and even tennessee thomas, who was the dj for the event (more to come later)! then i headed over to the gretchen jones presentation, and finished off the day at the lauren moffatt fno event.

i was very honored to have been on the roster for the event, and i can’t tell you how wonderful it was to meet all of the lovely ladies (and boys) who came out for the occasion. fashion’s night out can be a little crazy in new york, but this event was just right. it was in a small boutique with a cooler of beers and bbq hot dogs! definitely right down my alley. and of course, for the occasion, i had to wear my absolute favorite lauren moffatt dress. i know i’ve worn this dress on the blog before, but it’s really too good to share only once!

well, i successfully survived day one of new york fashion week! and here’s what i wore on day one. the rainy weather was a bit unexpected for me: when i checked the forecast before packing, there didn’t appear to be any threat of rain, but by the time i arrived, it was clear that we were going to be experiencing thunderstorms and several inches of rainfall. fortunately, i did manage to stuff my silly new raincoat (which i discovered reading le blog de sushi) into my luggage! i got a lot of compliments, despite the fact that i am essentially wearing a plastic bag. albeit a very retro fun and slightly chic one, haha! and it really was the perfect compliment to my pretty family affairs dress. and even more fitting were these epic hanging chairs in the main lounge at the lucky fabb conference. obviously a clear choice for an impromptu photo shoot.

and speaking of fashion week, stay tuned for a lot of posts. yesterday i went to the steven alan presentation and the rachel comey show, so more pictures are on the way! and than you to rebecca for taking these photos!

monterey

calivintage: monterey

i’m back from a weekend away in monterey, ca! it was brendan’s birthday on sunday, so we decided to head out of town right after work on friday and drove two hours to our room in asilomar all ready waiting for us with fresh wood in the fireplace. the next morning, we woke up bright and early to explore the area before ending the evening with celebratory chocolate mousse cake and champagne. some of our adventures included an epic breakfast of turkey and avocado benedict, a very fruitful trip to a local used bookstore, a beautiful drive along the scenic 17-mile drive, and a pleasant stroll along a trail in asilomar that led us to the beach in these photos! these are the types of weekends that i live for, these wonderful carefree days where i can just get away from it all to enjoy some outside air in the company of my favorite person!

and do you recognize this tunic? it’s the family affairs field of diamonds tunic made exclusively for of a kind that i’m giving away on my blog this week. if you’re interested in the details, you can read all about the tunic and the giveaway in this post, or you can simply enter to win it by signing up for the of a kind weekly mailing list! a winner will be randomly selected tomorrow evening, so get to it!

lucky magazine!

calivintage: lucky magazine

today i am so happy to be sharing some exciting news: i’m a member of the new lucky magazine style collective! you may remember a couple of weeks ago, i tweeted about the news and linked to this new york times article, which outlines what we expect to be doing in the coming months. and just this past week, the september issue came out and i was lucky enough to be asked to contribute a little piece for their “from the blogs” section in the print magazine! i styled up this outfit as a preview of how i hope to be dressing this fall: in pale pastels and 1960s-inspired shapes. mostly influenced by the fall 2011 collections from philosophy, prada, and peter jensen.

anyway, i’m as happy as a clam right now and so pleased to be able to share this exciting news with you! so next time you’re waiting in line at the grocery store, pick up the september issue of lucky to catch a glimpse of me!

the big island

calivintage: keokea

today is my last day in hawaii! my week long adventure has finally come to an end and i’m headed to the airport in a few short hours thankful to have had to opportunity to come here, and happy to have a few photos to remember it by. these were taken near keokea beach park on the northernmost tip of the big island of hawaii. the scenery on this part of the island is breathtaking to say the least, and i really wish i had more time to explore the area! but it was fun to hop around the beach in another one of the vintage dresses i picked up at discovery antiques earlier this week! the sixties style and bright colors really popped against the green and blue scenery.

i’m also very honored to have picked up this beautiful hand woven clutch from the kimura lauhala shop. i discovered the shop while exploring the artist community in holualoa and was blown away by the beautiful selection of hand woven bags and hats. the woman behind the counter told me that the shop had been built by her grandfather in 1914 after he walked across the island from hilo with her grandmother. they set up shop and her grandmother began designing beautiful hand woven bags and hawaiian fabrics. lining the shelves behind the counter were vintage purses woven by her grandmother that i wish she would have let me buy! but she said she was keeping them in hopes that her daughters would learn to make them! it’s that wonderful, rich history that draws me to vintage, and i was so thankful to have had the opportunity to listen to her story!

setting sun

calivintage: setting sun

one thing that i love most about the summer season is that it’s still light out at 8:30pm, as was the case when we snapped these photos before a night out. unfortunately, it was a little dark for photos, but i wanted to capture my silly little outfit, which is clearly somewhere between retro flight attendant and daffy duck! the hat is definitely what does it. i scored this darling little topper for only 5 bucks at the flea market. i’m sure it’s seen better days, but i’m happy to give it new life in the form of another cartoonish outfit. sometimes you’re just in the mood to play!

put a bird on it

calivintage: put a bird on it

pretty much any time i see a bird on anything, i now have to reference that sketch. such was the case with my new bird print dress that i wore for a date night with the boy. and you’ll have to excuse the high volume of photos. i guess we got carried away prancing around the neighborhood in the setting sun. we were goofing off taking photos and looked over to notice some dude just watching us from his window. it was a little awkward, but i just laughed it off. i’ve been trying to be more and more brave about going out and taking pictures in public, but you would be amazed at how many people either stop to watch, or shout things from their car windows as they pass by. nothing bad, but it certainly makes me feel a little silly.

anyway, i really liked this look because it’s a little fancier than my usual attire. and it was the perfect opportunity for me to try wearing my new earrings from jene de spain. believe it or not, i have actually never worn dangly earrings before in my life. with short hair, i just never really thought they were a possibility! but these art deco-inspired earrings have proven me wrong! i actually think they are a perfect compliment to a short bob. i have been converted!

i am a pilgrim

calivintage: i am a pilgrim

oh hello! i am dressed like a pilgrim on acid. or at least that’s how i like to describe it. i found this little guy at a vintage shop in the mission last weekend hanging up on a wall and immediately knew that it had to be mine. and wouldn’t you know, when they took it down from the wall and i tried it on, it was the perfect fit! i especially love the exaggerated collar and trippy psychedelic print. and for whatever reason, these little shift dresses, no matter how difficult they may be to wear, always find a way to sneak into my closet and beg me to wear them.

anyway, this is what i wore to a bbq/backyard show yesterday connecting with old friends that i hadn’t seen in a long while. the weather was actually warm here in oakland, and i was able to wear this little dress all day long without a sweater! that’s pretty miraculous considering just the day before it was freezing cold and raining. but that’s the way the weather is these days. now i’m off to partake in holiday weekend festivities!

today is a particularly special day because i’m wearing my brand new lauren moffatt dress! you may remember a few months back, i was fortunate enough to go on a lauren moffatt studio visit to check out her upcoming fall 2011 collection. while i was there, i snapped a few behind-the-scenes photos and basically attempted to contain myself at the sight of so many beautiful pieces. time and again, her collections come out in my top list of favorites, so when they offered to send me a dress from the spring collection, i was over the moon! and you can bet that the moment it arrived, i threw it on with a pair of vintage flats and wore it 2 days in a row, haha! it’s one of those dresses that just feels so right!

mod world

calivintage: mod world

oh hello! i feel like it’s been a long while since i’ve done an actual outfit post! so this is what i wore to work yesterday! it ended up being a bit too chilly for me to take of my coat, but underneath i am wearing a cute little mod mini dress that my mom gave me when i got to see her over the weekend for my sister’s wedding. she lives in tucson, and apparently they have pretty good vintage and thrift out there, because she’s been picking up all sort of amazing pieces here and there over the past several months that she thought i might like. if you were ever wondering how i became obsessed with vintage, now you know that i have my mother to blame! neither of us can ever keep ourselves from obsessively hunting for vintage finds. we both meet up every few months with our bounties to exchange and the process continues. oh dear. it runs in the family.
