want: candela millicent dress

3

i first saw this dress at the candela spring 2014 presentation back in september. and i kid you not, i haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. what’s more is that i had to go and check the candela site only to discover that it’s now on sale. sitting there, taunting and teasing me in all of it’s impractical glory, begging for a reason to be bought. i try to imagine just hanging it on my wall, tossing it on to lounge around the house on lazy afternoons, or wearing it while i frolic in a field of flowers in the hazy setting sunlight. a girl can dream, can’t she?

for the new dad

i’ve been buying father’s day gifts for my dad since i was a little kid, but this year there’s a new dad to celebrate! it’s so funny to now add the title of dad to my partner brendan. i want him to feel special for his first father’s day, especially because he’s hardly had a moment to himself between work, finishing grad school, and taking care of our new little baby dude. so when east dane asked me if i’d like to pull together a father’s day gift guide, i knew right away that it’d be dedicated to brendan and all of those first time dads out there who need a special treat.

oliver people’s gregory sunglasses – he’s been meaning to get a cool pair of sunglasses for ages, but never seems to wanna bite the bullet when we’re out shopping!

gitman vintage tiger tiger shirt – it’s always good to have a little bit of fun with your clothes after work and on the weekends. i know brendan would like the subtle, yet playful design on this cool short-sleeve shirt.

the golden age of dc comics – brendan is a serious comic book nerd. i know he’s more of a marvel man, but i think he’d have fun flipping through this coffee table book.

sperry topsider classic boat shoes – just the other day, brendan was commenting that he wore through his favorite top siders. sometimes a practical gift is the best kind.

form function form button stud timex minute man watch – watches are by far my best stand-by when it comes to giving brendan a gift. this man loves his watches and has a box full of different straps to switch out to change their look.

scotch & soda striped swim trunks – these would go great along with a little poolside date.

brooks b17 saddle – we’ve gone on countless bike tours together over the years. even though we don’t get to ride bikes nearly as much as we used to, i think this would be a nice, sentimental gift.

herschel supply co. backpack – don’t make daddy carry around a silly diaper bag! this backpack is a way better option for both parents, don’t you think?

want: the denim tee

it’s one of those items that feels like it should already be in my closet. one of those basics that you never pick up because it’s always around– until you’re actually looking for it. they pop-up in stores now and then. i remember last spring, i saw a simple denim shift dress at madewell, but it sold out before i was able to snag one. i saw one not too long ago in a boutique, but the price point was a little too high for me. i’ve had the above image in my inspiration folder for the last two years. it’s the perfect, lightweight chambray tee that would be so good for these frequent los angeles heat waves. and i also wouldn’t mind one in a slightly more substantial denim like the photo below. they’re simple enough that i should probably just try to find an easy pattern and sew one up some afternoon. but maybe there’s something good floating out around there that i just haven’t found yet.

any leads i should know about?

want: vintage lawn dresses

i’m going to preface this saying that i know this is entirely impractical for my lifestyle, but i don’t think a spring or summer goes by where i don’t find myself wishing i could dress like a sister wife on summer vacation in some dainty vintage lawn dress made of white eyelet. i actually once found one at the alameda flea market for $80 in exactly my size. i was in super bargain-mode at the time, and for some reason decided this was an unreasonable price (it’s not), and i’ve kicked myself for not buying it ever since.

want: ona camera bag

came across this camera bag by ona bags. i’m always torn about what to use for lugging around my big old canon 5d, but this one might take the cake. a super classic leather handbag on the outside, a practical and functional camera bag on the inside.

want: charlotte stone sandals

i came across these simple sandals by charlotte stone while browsing pinterest (of course) and now i can’t get them out of my mind. they come in a number of colors, but i think my favorite is this pair in white. the brand is based here in los angeles and the shoes are all hand-crafted in brazil. definitely on my (growing) list of shoes i want this spring/summer.

want: wardrobe update

i can’t believe it’s been three weeks since adam was born. between taking care of him and doing my best to take care of myself, i’ve hardly left the house! so most days, i’ve been wearing leggings and t-shirts around the house since chances are it will end up covered in baby puke at some point, and i need something with easy enough access for breastfeeding. i thought dressing for pregnancy was hard, but the art of dressing when you become a mom is even more difficult. and in the coming weeks, i’ll actually be emerging from the house and will need a few practical things to wear.

so while adam has been sleeping, i’ve been putting together my “mom wardrobe” because there is no way you’ll catch me wearing my leggings and t-shirts out in public. separates are important for breastfeeding. personally, i’ve found that i prefer lifting up my shirt over pulling it down (mostly because i am, ahem, rather well-endowed and feel much more comfortable when i’m a bit more covered up on top). and in the event that i want to wear a dress, a button front is necessary. these are difficult rules to play by when most of your wardrobe is full of high-neck sixties mini dresses, but i’ve found some good pieces that i think will do me well in this next stage of my life.
