sammich cake

calivintage: smörgåstårta

no, your eyes are not deceiving you. this is a food post on a fashion blog. please don’t roll your eyes too much because i am quite proud of my latest creation! as i’m sure some of you know, i work for modcloth.com as an editorial specialist. this basically means that in addition to writing posts for the blog, i run the modcloth tumblr and instagram, and generally produce editorial content for the site. i also do most of the blog photography and even recently shot some campaign photos. it’s basically a really fun, creative job where i get to dabble in all sorts of different projects. after hesitating for over two years, i finally decided to try my hand at a cooking post. and this is what was born: it’s a sammich cake! also known as a smörgåstårta. i made it and took the photos at my friend’s house and now i feel like i’ve been bitten by the food blogging bug.

anyway, i originally posted this on the modcloth blog (where you can find my recipe), but i just had to share the photos here because i was so pleased with my first attempt, and wondered what you guys thought. little known fact: many moons ago, i was professionally trained in culinary school and am actually a certified pastry chef. i’ve never shared any of my work here because it’s a fashion blog, but perhaps you’d like to see what else i’ve got up my sleeve?

it reminds me so much to the ‘sandwichón’ but a veggie and prettier version of it.

Oh, Erin. Some days you just really do make me so happy. And I for one would love to see more food posts. I always thought that the pastry chef thing was interesting – I’ve come across several fashion bloggers with the same background now. I wonder if there is some kind of creative element to it that pulls from the same place as fashion experimentation. I suppose in some ways cooking style and sartorial style may be quite closely related.

    • erin (calivintage) May 23, 2012 at 7:22 pm #

ah, how interesting! i think you’re right that there is a creative element. i have always been more artistically inclined, so i think i went for culinary school because it felt like a more practical way to use my creativity. i mostly decorated cakes (lots of weddings) and made cute little pastries. it was definitely fulfilling, but not as lucrative as i had hoped… but yes, i suppose fashion and food are much more related than meets the eye!

that looks incredible! and loved hearing about your background in pastry chef-ery! can’t believe you’ve never mentioned that, but understand how the ‘fashion blog’ aspect can sometimes dictate what you share :)

    • erin (calivintage) May 23, 2012 at 7:23 pm #

haha, yes, it’s funny how that works. i sometimes forget how little i actually share here, and it’s always this silly moment of enlightenment when i realize that people might be interested in more than just outfits!

You continue to do a beautiful job of building a cohesive fashion blog that never seems dull- however, it is ALWAYS super interesting to see the many talented sides of an individual person….which are usually more related than one might think. A certified pastry chef!! How cool is that?! Perhaps it’s building steam with our generation but I know many women who are well-rounded and versed in various fields. (I am a: painter, jewelry designer, floral designer, furniture up-grader & graphic designer…and that’s not counting hobbies…heh) Thanks for sharing a new view to calivintage.! Beautiful photos + I cannot wait to try the recipe!
