my nyfw: lauren moffatt fall 2012 presentation

IMG_7224

as you know, i’ve been a huge fan of lauren moffatt for some time. and while i’ve been lucky enough to visit her studio to preview her collections a few times, i’ve always wished she would have a proper presentation! so you can imagine my delight yesterday when she shared her fall 2012 collection in two little class rooms at an old abandoned school. i snapped a few photos and shared them on the modcloth blog today, but i got so many that i just had to share the rest of them here!

“lauren moffatt’s fall 2012 collection is inspired by the innocent and classically undone style of a schoolgirl. the collection, with its timeless color palate and buttoned up silhouettes is effortlessly chic with just a tough of mischievousness that lurks behind every schoolgirl’s peter pan collar and pleated skirt.”

as with all of her collections, it was all about the details! my lens isn’t the best at capturing super close-up shots, but hopefully you can still spot some of the intricate lace, textured fabrics, and pretty silk prints in addition to interesting necklines and unexpected cut-outs all expertly styled by martha violante.

my nyfw: steven alan fall 2012

steven alan fall 2012

i woke up yesterday morning bright and early at 6:30am (ahem, 3:30am california time) to make my way to the steven alan fall 2012 presentation. the first show of fashion week! not only that, but it was an absolute pleasure to be able to take a peek backstage before the show and to get a chance to look at all of the pieces up close and personal. the only downside was that i was just a tad bit bleary-eyed and jet-lagged from my flight, so please excuse me if i am lacking in eloquence today!

the entire collection was stunning yet understated. one of my favorite looks was of a model with a fedora perched neatly atop her head with an easy, belted jacket reminiscent of a mexican blanket paired with a bold red skirt. the collection took a nod to the late diego rivera with it’s south american influences and pops of color, all the while remaining cool and casual. definitely a nice way to kick off new york fashion week!

my nyfw: oscar de la renta spring 2012

calivintage: oscar de la renta spring 2012

as i’m sure you’ve noticed by now, there’s a pretty steady trend in the shows that i attended during nyfw. i (as you would expect) generally lean towards vintage-inspired collections that are wearable and on the more affordable end of the spectrum in terms of designer clothing. but that isn’t to say that i don’t appreciate the more intricate and ornate work of designers like oscar de la renta. i had the pleasure of being able to attend the spring 2012 show and snagged a pretty awesome spot standing at the end of the runway, where i attempted to digest all of the beautiful details as they flew past. and there was a lot to take in: from the cool ’70s separates to the cinderella-esque ball gowns complete with ornate little slippers! i was delighted by the chartreuse hues, and charmed by the cute low-heeled sandals and clear vinyl booties. and that’s only scratching the surface.

i actually had the opportunity to visit the oscar de la renta studio back in febraury during fashion week, and got to see first-hand the amount of fine handwork that goes into each one of these incredible pieces. every time a model flew by on the runway, i was reminded of all the hard work and dedication that i had seen last season. so i don’t speak lightly when i say that it was truly an honor to have been able to experience such a beautiful show.

my nyfw: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

calivintage: family affairs spring 2012 sneak peek!

after my fifth trip to new york for fashion week, i’ve begun to start forming a few traditions. one is that i usually spend the entire trip joined at the hip with rebecca of the clothes horse. and the other is that we always head over to brooklyn to visit the very charming nina of family affairs. she always greets us with a very warm welcome and invites us into her studio to drink coffee and eat treats before previewing her collection and playing a bit of dress up!

on this particular visit, she showed us a lovely rack full of fun and whimsical pieces that have got me wishing we could fast forward six months to spring 2012 so i can prance about on some silly boardwalk wearing all of her designs. she just shot the lookbook with maya of turned out, so i promise to share the rest of the collection soon! but for now, i thought i would show just a few photos from our visit as a little tease. don’t you just love her amazing vintage tiger flats? and i seriously can’t get enough of that pretty necklace, which is from her jewelry collection, toujours toi!

my nyfw: suno spring 2012

suno spring 2012

last season, the suno fall collection was one of my favorites. i fell in love with a particular cala lilly print, and haven’t been able to get it out of my mind since. so this season, i was pretty excited about their new collection and their first runway show. i especially loved the crisp white and blue cotton pieces with plenty of clean lines and patterns, some beautiful lace cutwork, and expert layering. layers in spring can be especially tricky for spring, but they definitely did it right. my favorite look was the cotton geometric printed dress with the apron back. there were some other silk prints and metallics mixed in, but overall, i preferred the lighter colors. and let’s talk about the hair! i loved those perfectly messy updos! suno spring 2012, you are awesome.

my nyfw: behind the scenes at rachel antonoff spring 2012

calivintage: rachel antonoff spring 2012

i know that pretty much anything i write about during nyfw is probably going to be one of my favorites, but i can’t describe how fun and exciting it was to go behind the scenes at rachel antonoff’s spring 2012 presentation. i have gone to her last two shows, and have found them to be the most creative presentations at fashion week, hands down. so when i managed to arrange for photo and video coverage behind the scenes, i was over the moon.

we arrived as the models were getting their hair and makeup done, a la wednesday adams complete with pigtail pleats and smoky eyes. i interviewed the hair and makeup artists from cutler and mac to get the lowdown on the concept before meeting the lovely tennessee thomas, who was djing the event. then we had a chance meeting with mr. wendy, the adorable cat who has been a model in every one of her shows before meeting up with rachel antonoff herself. she even invited her adorable grandparents to see the collection! it was a wonderful time that i will not soon forget and it was a pleasure to be able to work on the video  with the totally awesome jon brown, and to share my coverage with you here and on the modcloth blog (scroll down to watch)!

my nyfw: jill stuart spring 2012

jill stuart spring 2012

since fashion week has started, i’m sure you’ve seen some sneak peeks of what i’ve been up to on tumblr, twitter, and instagram. but today i’m excited to begin sharing some of the photos i’ve been taking at the shows. one of my favorites so far was the jill stuart spring 2012 show. after having been mildly obsessed with the fall and resort collections, i was a little concerned that i’d built up the spring show too much in my mind. but once i saw the first look walk down the runway (see: the nude and red palm tree dress with a pleated and scalloped hem) i knew i was in for a treat. i loved the sort of art deco floridian theme with the palm tree motif and excellent colors. the pink and green in particular reminded me of the colors you might see in my great aunt’s bathroom, and i mean that in the best way possible. but besides the show-stopping colors, i loved the quilted jackets, which reminded me of glamorous vintage sleepwear, and i even caught a glimpse of what looked like little retro faces on the print of a dress. and of course, the gold details on the shoes and the perfectly messy side swept hair completed the looks. another collection well-done that i will be turning to for inspiration for months to come!

a visit with family affairs

as you can see, i kept pretty busy during fashion week with all of the regularly scheduled tumblr events, but i also managed to squeeze in a number of other visits with what little free time i had left. during one such break between shows, rebecca and i crossed the bridge over to brooklyn for a studio visit with the lovely nina of family affairs. this was our second visit with her, and it was a lovely break from the fashion week madness to sit down with coffee, treats, and berries to talk about fashion and preview her upcoming fall collection! i can’t show you much since it’s not quite ready for release, but i’m particularly excited about this collection and can’t wait to share more with you.

but in the meantime, i can show just a teeny tiny little sneak peak at one of the looks, as seen above on the cover of her look book, and seen below as modeled by rebecca. i tried on the same dress in another print, and i am absolutely in love with it’s versatility! can’t wait to share more, but in the meantime, be sure to check out the family affairs site!

a lauren moffatt sneak peek!

oh i just can’t help but be a bit of a tease about my recent visit to the lauren moffatt studio! rebecca of the clothes horse was kind enough to let me tag along and get a sneak peek of the upcoming fall collection while we were visiting new york for fashion week. all i can say is that i am beyond excited about the new pieces, and already have several items on my wishlist for the fall! below you can see two sneaky little shots of the pieces, gingerly hanging on the racks, just waiting to be previewed! i love the unexpected color combinations and slight 1970’s inspiration of the collection, described as “laura ingalls wilder on crack,” by lauren herself. right up my alley, haha!

but since i’ll have to wait for the fall to get my hands on these pieces, i’m keeping myself busy checking out the spring collection up for sale on the lauren moffatt site right now!

it was a group effort. half of the photos are mine, but images 2, 4, 6, and 9 were shot by rebecca.

rachel antonoff spring 2011

on saturday, i was invited to attend the rachel antonoff spring 2011 presentation! i remember last season when her fall collection came out, i was instantly captivated by the nancy drew themed presentation at the lafayette house, and wished that i had been able to attend. so i was especially happy to be able to see her latest dreamland in real life! the collection was inspired by a child’s ability to transform any space into something magical, and it was presented at a private residence in the west village complete with a sleepover party upstairs, a living room fort, and s’mores in the kitchen. besides the beautiful details like heart shaped pockets and abstract bow prints, i was absolutely in love with the collaboration between rachel antonoff and bass shoes!
another lovely highlight of the event was meeting rachel antonoff herself along with julia frakes, who styled the collection. i also brought rebecca of the clothes horse (my partner in crime) along with me, and we got a chance to stop and chat with the lovely tavi, who we had first met during new york fashion week exactly one year ago. reunion times ensued and fun was had by all!
