vintage picnics

last night i was sitting with my boyfriend having a chat and he asked me if we could go on lots of picnics over the weekend. picnics are pretty much one of my favorite things to do, so today my head has been filled with sammich and watermelon and potato salad dreams. so i thought i would post some of these beautiful vintage photos of people on picnics so you could share my mood. none of these are my own, but you can click through for the source of each one.

i’m off to the grocery store to buy the ingredients for a grilled portobello mushroom sammich. care to share any of your favorite picnic foods and/or locations? i feel like hearing picnic stories and ideas.

  1. ive been meaning to go on a picnic in the park for weeks! please take photos of yours to inspire me to get my act together ;)

  2. i love pictures.
picnics are my favorite, but really they are.
it is the best to sit in a pretty place on the ground and eat good food.

question: how did you get your navigation bar to have a different font like that? it really is lovely!

  3. Ahhh picnics. I love them in theory, but sometimes a good time can be literally dampened by unexpectantly wet grass. Good thing I heard about the solution where you can put a shower curtain underneath your picnic blanket to avoid that! Then one can enjoy their sammiches in peace.

  4. When I was younger, my uncle lived in in a house right on along the river (just inside the Indiana/Ohio border)– one of my favorite parts of summer would be traveling with my family out there so we could play with our cousins and eat the basics (fried chicken, hotdogs, burgers, and corn on the cob). We'd play in the river in front of his house because it wasn't very rough and was only maybe 3 feet deep. The best part about the river was you would walk against the current up a bit further from the house and then turn around and just let the current float you down toward camp. Those were some of my best memories of my childhood, getting to play in the river and picnic on the riverbanks.

I hope you have great time picnic-ing this weekend!

  5. Ah I love these photos. My aunt has family photo albums that have been passed through the generations. In one of them is a picture of two ladies in the late 1800s wearing full dresses, sitting in lawn chairs outside, sipping out of fancy teacups and holding saucers. At their feet is a big white box with bold black print that says "TRISCUITS". It's one of my favorite photos in the album.

  6. I like night-time picnics. As a surprise date I took my husband out to the country side and we laid on a blanket and looked at the stars while eating tiramisu and listening to the original broadcast of H.G. Wells' The War of the Worlds. It was creepy in a fun way. :)

  7. This is so crazy because my bf and I are going on a picnic later today!! I'm going to make a mixed berry/pound cake/mascarpone…thing and we'll have spinach and sundried tomato pizza with a little cheese plate and root beers!

  8. Picnics are my favorite, too. My most favorite date last year was when my honey & me went out to a park, ate fried chicken and played Phase 10. It was truly, absolutely divine. For food, I like friend chicken tenders (yummy cold), frozen fruit kabobs, cheese, olives, bread, sangria, you name it!

  9. What fantastic photos, they are beautiful. I hope you have a lovely time on your picnic with your boyfriend, I hope to be doing that this sunday xxx

  10. i love picnics too,I bought a wooden picnic basket three weeks ago ;) last time we went to Stinson beach around 10am. was great, not that many people.
My plan for this Sunday was to go for a picnic at the stern grove festival in SF. http://sterngrove.org. check it out! They have free concterts and you can picnic wherever you want. It's great! I'm not going, because we are going to mendocino tomorrow ;) …have a great weekend.

  11. these are fabulous, Erin! Nothing beats a picnic around this time of year. I DO love my picnic basket with all of my heart. x

  12. I also adore picnics, here in Ottawa I often go to the Parliament Hill and eat on the nice lawns.

Some great picnic foods have included, strawberries, brie and baguette, hummus and pita, chips and salsa and so many more delicious things, haha.

  13. These pictures are so neat! I love going on picnics too; one of my favorite dates when my husband and I were dating was going to a park/historic landmark and taking a picnic lunch. I've been in the mood to do that lately too–I need to find a spot around here for that sort of thing!

  14. my best picnic experience was when my husband surprised me at work with a stocked picnic basket for the best lunch break i've ever had! we enjoyed sparkling wine, prusciutto & mozzarella, all different types of olives and fresh fruit salad for dessert. delish! what you pack doesn't count as much as the company you bring :) enjoy!
