orla kiely fall 2014

49

i know i’m a little late, but better late than never when it comes to the orla kiely fall 2014 collection. seeing photos of the presentation popping up on blogs and social media really made me wish i could have been at london fashion week! i swear one day i’ll make it out there! but while i’m dreaming of making a trip abroad, at least i can satisfy myself just a little bit with this new lookbook. i love the ’90s does ’60s vibe, it makes me think of a very refined version of the way i wished i could have dressed back when i was in high school. the chunky t-straps and little kitties on sweaters and prints are so perfectly ’90s goth, while the big daisy prints and girly elements are a bit more cher horowitz. but the more structured dresses and coats pull it back into the more grown-up and refined femininity that you come to expect from orla kiely with just the right touch of playful nostalgia.

peter jensen fall 2014

each season, designer peter jensen chooses a new muse to inspire his latest collection. for fall 2014, he set his sights on the career of the iconic faye dunaway. each piece draws reference from her various roles in films like the thomas crown affair, network, and mommie dearest. if you’re a film buff, it’s a delight to pick up on all the meticulous references, but even if you haven’t seen her movies, the collection alone is a feast for the eyes. plenty of ’60s and ’70s styles with the usual jensen twist and pitch perfect styling.

rachel antonoff fall 2014

rachel antonoff has just released her fall 2014 looks along with another charming short film, and as always, i’m quite smitten with her collection. this season, she drew inspiration from shockproof sydney skate, a 1970s a coming-of-age  novel written by marijane meaker, often credited as the creator of  the genre “lesbian pulp fiction.” antonoff’s no smoking motifs and are a reference to one of the main characters who was often found with matchbooks filling her pockets and purses. i particularly love the embroidered collars and a white silk novelty print on a cute cocktail dress and a fun pair of palazzo pants.

lauren moffatt fall 2014

today i’m excited to share a preview of the upcoming lauren moffatt fall 2014 collection. her designs have long been favorites of mine, and once again, she doesn’t fail to disappoint with a huge collection filled with amazing prints and patterns, plenty of separates to mix and match, and some really awesome knitwear and outerwear. there really is something for everyone in this cool collection, and the styling is spot-on as usual.

family affairs fall 2014

this season was the first time in a few years that i wasn’t able to visit nina in her studio to preview the latest collection during fashion week. it was hard to be away, but she sent me the images from the family affairs fall 2014 lookbook, which served as a bit of consolation. the collection, titled “milk and honey,” was inspired by:

“tea dances in london when you are wearing your patent leather dancing shoes for the first time, marguerite duras’ melancholy romance, silent movie stars in underwater films, witch potions and mornings listening to records in bed while it snows outside. “

i love the other-wordly vibe of this shoot and collection. for the prints, nina created her own alchemy symbols  referencing irish fairytales and italian futurism. it’s a fun mix of references. there are plenty of sweet dresses, but i’m also really enjoying the addition of high-rise trousers and some really cool oversized blazers for the season.

dusen dusen fall 2014

as if there wasn’t enough to swoon over in the current spring collection, dusen dusen has just released their fall 2014 lookbook. the collection is huge(!) and filled with plenty of cool wearable dresses, separates, and knits in the fun, geometric prints that are the designer’s signature. this season, designer ellen von dusen said she drew inspiration from a variety of sources, “jonas wood paintings, sports uniforms, her, robert wyatt, my dog and my friends.”

samantha pleet fall 2014

not sure about you, but i’ve been catching glimpses of the new samantha pleet fall 2014 collection and film over the past several weeks on social media, eagerly anticipating their release. the film will be screening tonight in nyc, and while i can’t be there, i have a little preview of the collection along with some stills to tide me over. once again, samantha has pulled inspiration from historical references, this time inspired by the visions of joan of arc. and while the imagery is stunning, and i’m sure the film is going to be amazing, let’s not forget the clothes! there’s a mix of well-made frocks and outerwear along with intricately embroidered motifs, and beautiful hand-made prints.

karen walker fall 2014

last season was my first opportunity to attend a karen walker show and i just about died. she’s long been a favorite, and while i wasn’t able to make it to nyfw this time around, i still had plenty of fun flipping through the looks. this season, the new zealand-based designer was inspired by suffragettes, creating a fun and rebellious collection of cool clothes (and sunglasses). she incorporated a striking broken-heart, hand, and hammer print, featured on a few cool dresses and in little brooch pins. and there were cheeky little phrases scattered about. i enjoyed the oversized silhouettes with little nods to menswear and a bit of victoriana thrown into the mix. definitely makes me wish i was the karen walker girl.

band of outsiders fall 2014

i’ve long been a fan of band of outsiders, but this season really caught my eye. mostly because there were about 500 pictures from the presentation plastered all over my instagram feed, but that’s definitely not a bad thing (even if it did make me a little bummed that i had to skip out on nyfw this season)! the brand focuses on wearable separates, of which there were plenty this season. everything looked so warm and cozy, but it was far from simple or boring. the designer was inspired by lee miller, man ray, and elsa schiaparelli as you could see in the cool tromp l’oeil details and illustrated backdrop. definitely a collection i wouldn’t mind getting my hands on this fall.
