my nyfw: backstage at lela rose fall 2012

IMG_9052

i know it’s been a month since new york fashion week, but due to a bit of a technical issue (in which my external hard drive died suddenly), i hadn’t been able to access the rest of the photos i took during fashion week! fortunately for me, i just realized that i managed to back-up my fashion week photos, so i hope you don’t mind this brief interlude back into fall fashion in the form of a few photos i took backstage and on the runway at the lela rose fall 2012 show. the moment i stepped into the backstage tent, i was floored by the hair and makeup! inspired by the gibson girls of early twentieth century, the romantic updos and dark, sultry eyes, took my breath away. i mean it! perhaps it has to do with the fact that i’ve always had short hair, but these types of intricate updos always leave me swooning.

another fun fact was that the hair was being done by none other than ted gibson. i have to admit that i may have been sucked into a few late night marathons watching old episodes of tlc’s what not to wear. and ted gibson is easily one of the most lovable characters on the show. so it was fun to see him in the flesh giving the girls his “modern gibson girl” look. the eye makeup was equally lovely, all done by stila (who happens to make my favorite eyeshadow). i loved the bold, dramatic brow.

charlotte taylor fall 2012

charlotte taylor fall 2012

continuing down the dark/light path, a storm is brewing at the jamaica inn, the inspiration for charlotte taylor fall 2012. the collection is equal parts mysterious and whimsical with dark yet playful prints in the form of pretty florals, geometric patterns, and birds in flight! taylor wove together the story of jamaica inn written by daphne du maurier in 1939. and while i haven’t read the book, i am now dreaming of throwing on one of these beautiful silk pieces while lounging about reading it! (or perhaps i will have to watch the hitchcock filk adaptation!)

ooh, and one other delight came in the form of the elegant rosalind jana of clothes, cameras, and coffee who modeled the collection! i also highly recommend you swing by the charlotte taylor site to see the lookbook come to life in the form of animated gifs!

samantha pleet fall 2012

samantha pleet fall 2012

amidst my recent stint at fashion week to preview fall collections, and all of the new spring pieces just arriving in stores, i feel like i’ve seen so many beautiful collections that i can hardly keep up! but while i may be scrambling to see them all, i still think it’s important to pause and appreciate them, too! so today i’d like to share the samantha pleet fall 2012 collection. as you can tell by their golden halos, this collection was inspired by the work of pre-raphaelite painters.

“the house-designed prints are ominous and brilliant, and the palette has a jewel-like transparency that carries the collection from light to dark.”

i love the way she played with cut-outs and high contrast elements balanced out with luxurious fabrics for a dramatic and romantic effect. all the while keeping the collection absolutely wearable for every day.

my nyfw: jill stuart fall 2012

IMG_8664

i know that nyfw ended last week, but i still have a few posts that i’d like to share with you over the next couple of days to round out all of my coverage from the shows! so today i’d like to share some of the photos i snapped at the jill stuart fall 2012 show. her beautiful spring collection made me weak in the knees, so i had my hopes set high when the lights went out and the crowd hushed as we waited for the latest looks to walk down the runway. i have to say, i was a bit surprised to see such dark and edgy looks after so many very feminine collections, but as more looks emerged, i started to settle into the new direction. and when the final few looks with there intricate embroidery, pretty collars, and cut out details, i fell in love.

my nyfw: behind the scenes at rachel antonoff fall 2012

IMG_8862

a couple of days back, i was lucky enough to attend the rachel antonoff fall 2012 presentation. i’ve said it before, but season after season she comes out with some of the most creative presentations during fashion week, and it’s always a treat to see what she comes up with next. this fall, she took us on a dreamy moonlit boat ride with another beautiful and wearable collection. the silk fern print was just lovely and the geometric florals were perfectly complimented by some stunning nail art. not only that, but we were treated to a musical performance by alia shawkat! so cool! once again, i can’t wait to get my hands on some of these pieces!

my nyfw: rachel comey fall 2012

the other night, i had the pleasure of attending the rachel comey fall 2012 show. i was allowed to take a look backstage to snap a few photos before the models got ready, so i was able to ooh and ahh at the epic shoes with very cool sheer socks designed in collaboration with hansel from basel. basically, it was a match made in heaven because rachel comey consistently makes the coolest shoes and hansel from basel always has the most creative socks! and well, i just can’t help but focus on those two details!

the collection was very sophisticated and minimalistic with a nod to the retro-futuristic ’60s with sleek beehives and cute vintage-inspired details like clear vinyl elements added to belts, dresses, and shoes!

my nyfw: whit fall 2012

IMG_8130

last night, i had the pleasure of attending the whit fall 2012 runway show along with a little sneak backstage to get a look at the hair, makeup, shoes, and accessories. one glance at the array of space age hair dos, and i knew i was in for a good show!

“the collection was inspired by the dreamy and romanticized portrayal of space in pre-moon landing pop culture…the resulting collection is a celebration of imagination and the night sky. the line feautures planetary prints on silks, structured metallics, retro jacquards, and brightly color wools.”

that and the excellent pairing of shoes by loeffler randall and orly genger by jaclyn mayer jewelry, and you’ve got one hell of a show. the mod mini dresses were perfectly retro fun, and i just can’t get enough of that planet print dress!

my nyfw: lauren moffatt fall 2012 presentation

IMG_7224

as you know, i’ve been a huge fan of lauren moffatt for some time. and while i’ve been lucky enough to visit her studio to preview her collections a few times, i’ve always wished she would have a proper presentation! so you can imagine my delight yesterday when she shared her fall 2012 collection in two little class rooms at an old abandoned school. i snapped a few photos and shared them on the modcloth blog today, but i got so many that i just had to share the rest of them here!

“lauren moffatt’s fall 2012 collection is inspired by the innocent and classically undone style of a schoolgirl. the collection, with its timeless color palate and buttoned up silhouettes is effortlessly chic with just a tough of mischievousness that lurks behind every schoolgirl’s peter pan collar and pleated skirt.”

as with all of her collections, it was all about the details! my lens isn’t the best at capturing super close-up shots, but hopefully you can still spot some of the intricate lace, textured fabrics, and pretty silk prints in addition to interesting necklines and unexpected cut-outs all expertly styled by martha violante.

my nyfw: steven alan fall 2012

steven alan fall 2012

i woke up yesterday morning bright and early at 6:30am (ahem, 3:30am california time) to make my way to the steven alan fall 2012 presentation. the first show of fashion week! not only that, but it was an absolute pleasure to be able to take a peek backstage before the show and to get a chance to look at all of the pieces up close and personal. the only downside was that i was just a tad bit bleary-eyed and jet-lagged from my flight, so please excuse me if i am lacking in eloquence today!

the entire collection was stunning yet understated. one of my favorite looks was of a model with a fedora perched neatly atop her head with an easy, belted jacket reminiscent of a mexican blanket paired with a bold red skirt. the collection took a nod to the late diego rivera with it’s south american influences and pops of color, all the while remaining cool and casual. definitely a nice way to kick off new york fashion week!
