outfit: homebody

just a simple outfit for a weekend day. i’ve been doing a lot of hibernating over the last couple of weeks, and a lot of my daily outfits have been super comfy to reflect that. i wore this for a very easy going sunday, eating decadent cream filled doughnuts from doughnut dolly, getting a flu shot, and doing some “spring” cleaning. i’ve been cleaning, rearranging, and decorating the apartment in an attempt to change things up a bit. the space is starting to feel fresh and new, which is especially nice for building a nest on the couch and reading books. it’s been really nice to use this month as a time to recharge in advance of what i expect to be a very busy year!

paule ka spring 2013

a couple of weeks back, i shared the paule ka resort collection, but i’m equally in love with their spring 2013 collection. the clean palette gives way to interesting silhouettes and quirky details like oversized gloves and ostrich feather trims, all with a decidedly ’60s aesthetic. i would love to be able to wrangle my hair in one of those big bouffants with pretty ribbons, and certainly wouldn’t mind a pair of clear lucite heels or a metallic handled basket bag. it’s a perfect mix of playful and elegant that i certainly wouldn’t mind adding to my own wardrobe!

karen walker spring 2013

one spring collection that’s got me swooning is karen walker spring 2013. i’ve long been a fan of her statement sunglasses, but i’m just as enamored with her quirky cute collections. titled “fantastique magnifique,” this collection was filled with retro-futuristic space prints, cool color combinations, and interesting proportions. i love the subtle wink and nod to the past while still keeping things feeling fresh and new. and i can’t wait to get my hands one one of those silly straw hats, which i’ve already pre-ordered for an upcoming trip to a tropical locale!

UPDATE: THIS CONTEST HAS ENDED.

club monaco spring 2013 campaign

continuing on my spring inspiration kick, today i thought i’d share the club monaco spring 2013 campaign shot on the streets of new york by none other than venetia scott. i’m a huge fan of her work, so it’s not much of a surprise that i can’t get enough of this campaign. i know it seems a bit unexpected, but it’s definitely been interesting the way that club monaco has started to capture my attention over the past year or so. until then, i had never even stepped foot into one of their stores, but now i find myself stopping-in for a quick browse whenever i’m at the mall. and looking at the pieces in the collection, i think i might need to spring for that cute little trench!

outfit: flowers and braids

these photos were snapped back at the beginning of december during a stroll through the mountain view cemetery near my house. some weekends are just made for long walks, and it really is the perfect place to visit after meandering through the neighborhood and stopping for a warm cup of coffee. i call this my “mcdonalds sweater” because it’s yellow and red and it makes me think of ketchup and mustard. i love it because it really does look vintage, but it’s a new piece from the lauren moffatt fall 2012 collection. she really does make the dreamiest pieces.

paule ka resort 2013

i’ve  been resisting the urge to post resort collections, but now that it’s january, i think we can officially start looking forward to spring break and summer vacation. paule ka first caught my attention last season with an eccentric fall collection filled with unexpected color combinations and inventive silhouettes. so of course, i had to check in on the latest resort collection, and i have to say i love it just as much! it particularly strikes a chord because i’ve been tying my hair into a little side pony with a ribbon for the past few weeks, and i just love these bright, bold bows. the colors are, once again, striking and interesting, and i love the ’60s vibe which will certainly continue to inspire me throughout the year.

outfit: on solid ground

well, it’s a new year and i’m back at home after the holidays slowly transitioning back to my usual routine. whenever i visit my hometown of redlands, i always imagine that i’ll have all this time to snap outfit photos in from of all my favorite spots, but relaxing in the warmth of my grandmother’s home with my brother and sister, aunts and uncles, and cousins, usually lures me away from my usual antics. but i did snap these photos on the last day of the year in front of the historic a.k. smiley public library. i have many memories in this place, hudled on the marble floors flipping through books.

i’m also wearing what i can easily say is my current favorite outfit. if i could get away with it, i’d wear this every day. the little tunic is handmade out of a velvety soft fine wale corduroy, and it matches so perfectly with the embroidered details of this vintage blouse. and the piÁ¨ce de rÁ©sistance is my new carven coat which i scored on super sale as a little christmas gift to myself. it has quickly put all of my other coats to shame.

wearing: elizabeth tunic courtesy of wayward daughter, vintage blouse, carven double-breasted tweed coat, tabio 110 denier tights in navy, vintage salvatore ferragamo vara pumps in navy, orla kiely gold sparkle leather holly bag,  ysl rouge pur couture glossy stain in rouge laque

new year

calivintage menudo

it’s always a special treat when i get to ring in the new year with my family. all my life, only once a year, my grandmother makes two giant pots of menudo for new year’s day. the whole family comes over to fill our bowls with soup and top it off with green onions, cilantro, tomatoes, oregano, and crushed chili peppers, and soak up the broth with warm tortillas. when i was a kid, i’d roll up the tortillas and use them as makeshift straws to drink the broth. then we’d all sit around the tv eating pan mexicano watching the rose bowl parade. i’m not a kid anymore, but i’m so thankful that i can still enjoy this simple tradition with my family.

here’s to a splendid new year!
