mi familia

jose and esther perez

phew! i just got back from my holiday weekend and i’m still recovering from three straight days of eating. when i go back home to visit, i always stay with my grandma, who has a talent for waking me up to bacon, hash-browns, eggs, and tortillas with home-made salsa every day. not to mention, the ridiculously large thanksgiving dinner which we began eating on thursday afternoon and almost finished by saturday.

so since the holidays often mean family, i decided to do a blog post about just that! i’ve been begging my aunt julie to send me family photos for months, so i was especially excited when she handed me a cd filled with old pictures that she scanned onto her computer. so thanks to julie and the wonders of modern technology, i am finally going to debut some of the perez family photo albums.

for the sake of space, i’ll probably be posting up my favorite pictures over several blog posts. it’s just so hard to pick which ones i like! for today, i am posting some of my favorite professional portraits. i love looking at these since it looks like it was such a formal affair to get all dressed up and stand rigidly in front of the camera. if you want to see all of the images i have uploaded so far, you can check them out at my flickr. i’ll probably be adding the entire collection over the next few days.

  1. these pictures are wonderful – and how special to have!

Can I also just give a shoutout to those beyond amazing furry pants? WOW.

  2. These are so beautiful and such a wonderful record too! Don't you love it how people so rarely smiled in black and white photos? It adds to the mood.

  3. there is little i love more than old family photos. my little sister has been appropriating most of ours though. i'll have to do something about that.

  4. I love how they pretty much never smile in these photos. If you go to Sears for a few family photos, they refuse to let you NOT smile. Heh.

  5. where is your family from?
Some of your fam have the Ventura last name and I was just curious because my dad's family have it..

  6. I love these pics! I agree, back then…it was mandatory to dress up to go places…now it's flip flops and Juicy Couture sweats!

  7. to answer your question, i am from southern california, but different sides of the family are from different locations. i know some of them lived in kansas for a while, though some of them are originally from aguascalientes in mexico.

  8. They take wayyy better photos in the past, don't they? The tones of the photographs, the props (that seem so very appropriate), their poses, the firm faces (as Rebecca pointed out). These are great and so precious!

  9. Great photos! My lola (grandmother) has pictures similar to these from the 1940s. I love looking at them because the fashions seem to be relevant even now.

  10. OMG Aguascalientes, Mexico?!?!??! WOW!!! That's where my family is from as well!!! Yay!!!

Anywho, this is an amazing post! Such precious pictures!!! And your grandma and my grandma share the same talent!!! hehe…

    xoxo

  11. You are so lucky to have such wonderful images of your family. Fantastic post! Makes me want to search for some of my family's photos! xoxo Jolie

  12. woah your family must have been pretty good in the money area. They are all dressed so very nicely. great shots. I adore old photos

  13. These are lovely photographs! I can't wait to see more — as you posted elsewhere, there aren't enough images of people of color in the American vintage imaginary. (Which I also mention at Threadbared.)

  14. Neat! I remember getting some emails from cousins who had scanned photos of our grandparents. It's a trip to see them so young.

I'd love to know any of the back stories on who these people are.
