no logo

the other evening i was chatting with my boyfriend over dinner, and as per usual, i was going on and on about new media and the relevance of blogs, where things are going, etc. and suddenly the book no logo by naomi klein popped into mind. i read it waaay back in 2001 when i was 18. it’s a critique on globalization and of course, being the impressionable young kid that i was, i soaked it up and used every possible opportunity to quote what i had read in almost every conversation. years later, i don’t much think about that book anymore, but i’ve always really respected klein’s work, so i wondered what she was up to and what her take would be on the influence of the internet (and blogs) in our culture. since she wrote that book, besides the major economic collapse, we now live in a world where social media is king. the landscape has certainly changed and i tend to believe it’s positive. bloggers like me can hang out in the comfort of our own homes and have the ability to influence fashion (or whatever they’re writing about) from the ground up. we really are experiencing a democratization of fashion, as they say. and it’s happening in news and politics as well.

and what a perfect subject to bring up on a day when i decided to wear some of the most recognizable brands in fashion. so what do you think? too much? haha! ;)

  2. I have never read that book but know it from years of working in book shops. I think I will have to check it out. Great outfit btw. raybans are an amazing piece that can finish off an outfit perfectly!

  3. I've been meaning to read no logo, I think I'll pick it up. I would love to hear Malcolm Gladwell's perspective on new media, his books are my addiction :)

    Love the flats!

  4. the funny thing is, even though you are wearing brand names, you're not at all ostentatious and i wouldnt be surprised if you decided to challenge yourself and thrift a replica of this outfit!

your attachment to no logo sounds like my attachment to thomas friedman's the world is flat. i parts of it when i was in high school and was just blown away by it.

  5. the jacket is adorable. Yeah, I'm working to get to the point where I can make enough living off my blog so it can be a main source of income.

  6. I loved this post – I need to check out that book! :) And I love that jacket of yours..and those shoes.eeeep…perfect! <3

  7. I totally get what you're saying, I too read the book some years ago. dressing up as you did sure does get the point across.

  8. that jacket is awesome and i love it every day you wear it.

i think that blogging has yet not reached it's total height. things are still changing…

  9. Like Lexie said earlier, you look great in all of your brand names, but not overbearing at all. And those Ray-Bans are the icing on the cake.

Thanks for the book suggestion! I'm been meaning to read that or The Shock Doctrine for several years now. In the economics vein, Confessions of an Economic Hitman is a good one, too.

    Happy Friday!

  10. I think it is interesting where blogging is going to take many of the institutions on a national and global scale… fascinating subject and I'm interested in reading her first book… I don't know if it's so much the outfit or the wayfarers, but I feel like you are harnessing Cate Blanchett today in a wonderful way!

  11. I really enjoyed reading this thoughtful post. Amen to grassroots efforts, whether political or fashionable! And you look utterly chic.

  12. I really do love this Marc By Marc Jacobs jacket. It goes perfectly with your hair! Well I know you already have a Rodarte for Target tulle dress in black, but I'm doing a giveaway, it's the blush color one, so if you're interested :) Oh will you be going to the Shop Social event next week? I'd love to meet some San Francisco bloggers! :)
