my mom

calivintage: my mom

i’m sure if you’ve been reading for a little while, you’ve noticed how often the subject of my mom comes up on here! there’s no way to say it without being cheesy, but she is a true inspiration to me. she’s the woman who would wake me up early on the weekends to go rummaging for treasures at estate sales, and who took me to the thrift store at least 2 times a week after school, and who would drive us out to hell and back searching all over southern california for cool vintage boutiques and antique shops for whatever interesting things we could find. and to this day, even though she lives all the way out in arizona, when i get to see her a couple of times a year, she brings boxes and bags of vintage finds to share with me. it would be an understatement to say that she’s the reason i am so in love with vintage and with getting dressed up in general!

a while back and i asker her if she could dig up some old photos of herself, and one day she sat at the scanner for hours and sent me tons of photos of herself and of my family when we were kids! i have way too many to share for one post, but i thought it would be nice to share a few photos of her when she was young. i wasn’t born yet, so many of these are from her teenage years and early twenties. can you see the resemblance at all?

  1. aw. she’s beautiful. i see the resemblance in the eyes for sure. i always wonder if i ever have a daughter would she be as obsessed with old junk as i am or would she think i was crazy? maybe i’ll eventually have someone in my gene pool to share this ever growing amass of the past with.

  2. Your mom is so cute! She looks like she had a great sense of style. That’s awesome that she passed a love for old things and fashion on to you. I love hearing about how family influences personal style. I can definitely see a resemblance!

  3. momma’s ARE the most inspiring, nothing cheesy about it. it’s amazing how much they influence us without us knowing it. love that you shared these photos, and i enjoyed hearing about your thrifting traditions!

  4. she is very beautiful! and you very much look like her. not very many would like to hear that, but it seems fitting to say it to you because you both seemed to have a great relationship. ive been inspired by you to start dressing up again. i want to thrift shop again. ive only been reading your blog for about two weeks and ive read every single post you had here. i want to pass on the joys of vintage shopping and style to my 8 yrl old as well. thank you!

I recently found a few 70’s-80’s photos of my mom that I need to scan in- and replicate her outfit!

  8. Your mom is beautiful and you look just like her! She sounds like a cool momma and I hope when my kids are older they will think of me as adoringly as you do your mom!

  9. She’s a doll! I’m guessing these snaps are from the ’70s? I love how she can pull off a pair of pants (that’s the trickiest garment to make chic, if you ask me!) and how she utilizes scarves. Very inspiring! :D

  10. I love seeing people’s old photos and looking at the resemblance between family members. Your mom is beautiful; I definitely see a lot of similarities between you and her. Cute pictures!

  11. Your mom is so beautiful. I love vintage family photos…how amazing she took you to all those thrift shops. I think you two have the same mouth/lips. The fourth black/white photo on the right looks a bit like you. Thanks for sharing these lovely pics of your mama.
