outfit: 90s dad

calivintage: 90s dad

perhaps it has to do with that fact that we’re currently in the midst of men’s fashion week, but for whatever reason, i’ve been digging the menswear lately. yesterday i wrote about p. johnson tailors and today i’m dressed (kinda) like a dude. i call it my dad outfit, so it was pretty appropriate that when i asked brendan if i fit the bill, he said i looked like chevy chase. especially since my idea of what a dad looks like is mostly some weird amalgamation of my own dad and dads i’ve seen in goofy 90s movies. personally i think i look a bit more like rick moranis. either way, the look definitely called for a pair of high rise pleated khaki shorts, which i hadn’t worn in almost two years! for some reason, over the past couple of years, i’ve really shied away from shorts. something about those itsy bitsy inseams makes me feel a bit overexposed, which is rather silly when you consider the length of most of my skirts (see monday’s post). so with a bit of encouragement from my coworkers who razzed me when i told them that i don’t like shorts, i decided to pull this pair out from the depths of my closet. last time i wore them was here and here. perhaps it’s time for a bit of a shorts revival! and a 90s movie marathon!

  1. oooj i love the fact that you rolled them up. I totally thought of “honey I shrunk the kids” when you mentioned ricky. Oooooh early 90s movies…EARLY 90s! late 90s…eugh…its all crap with billy bob thorton :P

  2. Love those shoes! True story: I used to have a pair of Bass loafers in grade school complete with a penny. I loved them soooo much I was sad when I grew out of them. Maybe I’ll find a pair again and add pennies. :)

  3. This is awesome! You pull off the 90s dad look very well! I especially like the shorts! I shy away from them, too, but I told myself I’m going to wear at least a pair or two this summer.

  4. I work in the mens store for Macy’s and I must say, I have indeed seen this look before on much an older gentleman. However, I was unaware just how adorable it could be on a cute girl! haha

  5. Love your outfit, and your 90s dad inspiration. Who knew dad clothes could look so cute? I’d like to see what you could do with a Midwestern mom motif. :D
I used to be really self conscious about shorts, but I’ve mostly gotten over it. As long as they cover my butt, I’m happy… although with some of those 1.5 inch inseams you find on shorts, that can be a tall order to fill sometimes.

  6. when i saw the title 90’s dad, the first thing that came to mind was danny tanner. but i’m a big fan of rick moranis too. in fact, little giants was just on today.

  7. You got style – no question! Love your blog, the way you handle colours, pattern and designs is amazing.
I’m impressed by your sense for style and aesthetics!
Therefor I’ll ask you to check out my art and living-designs, since your opinion seems to me kind of universal and general.
