my nyfw: visiting the modern vice factory

during my trip to new york in february, i had the opportunity to stop by the modern vice showroom for a little tour of their factory. call me a nerd if you like, but i’ve always been fascinated by the process that goes into making a garment (or in this case, a shoe). perhaps it’s all of those years watching mister roger’s neighborhood and getting a glimpse at how crayons are made. either way, it was a real treat to walk into the chelsea showroom and to be ushered in to a full-blown shoe factory behind two swinging doors. all of their shoes are hand-crafted in small batches right in this little space. though the brand is relatively new, the factory has been here for years, producing custom ice skates (as you can see pictures below) with cute etchings drawn to the leather soles. but now this space is also alive with activity as they sew up the new natalie + dylana suarez for modern vice boots, like these cute suede benni’s that they so kindly gifted me after my tour was complete!

all photos be me.

  1. this is amazing! you don’t think often about how our garments are made…i think we all assume it’s robots or something. these dudes look like a fun bunch :)

  2. A factory tour is such a treat. Thank you for the awesome photos.

I love that it’s also an ice skate manufacturer! I’ve always wanted to wear a pair as boots. With the skates removed, obviously. This California girl can’t skate.
