these colors

calivintage: orange and black
today i had a bit of fun mixing colors. i bought this vintage 1940’s black and orange dress last year, but i’ve only worn it a couple of times.  i think the challenge is that it’s, well, black and orange.  definitely appropriate for halloween.  also appropriate for celebrating the giants winning the world series.  but the rest of the year, i find it challenging to work with this particular color.  i’ve been living in these super warm olive green tights, so i sorta just threw them on as an afterthought, but you know what?  green is a really nice compliment to orange, especially this muted shade. so here’s to continuing experiments with color!
hm.  and now that i think of it, this orange color has got me craving some pumpkin pie!  i haven’t had a slice yet this year, and i’ve got quite the hankering. and i have two little pumpkins sitting in my kitchen just waiting for the transformation.  never made a pumpkin pie from scratch before, but i think i’m gonna try.  ah yes, don’t we all love a good excuse to sit around eating food all day?

textures

i recently bought a lovely mohair cardigan in a dark charcoal grey, and i’m obsessed with the fuzzy texture.  in fact, i’ve just been really interested in all sorts of textures lately, which is why this simple editorial at la garconne is particularly appealing to my senses. i don’t have the budget to be picking up any of the designer pieces shown, but they’ll certainly come in handy as inspiration when i got out thrifting this weekend.  fuzzy sweaters, tweeds, and baubles for all!

a neighborhood stroll

calivintage: mellow yellow
it feels like it’s been such an awfully long time since i’ve done a post out in the world rather than on my little rooftop!  so today i decided to take you on a little walk around my neighborhood in oakland and show you a few sights.  on this particular day, we woke up late and lazy, and strolled over to one of our favorite breakfast spots, lynn and lu’s escapade cafe.  it’s a little hole-in-the-wall with really good prices for the bay area (think: $7.95 for eggs benedict!), and they have the nicest staff in the world.  they come by every 10 seconds to fill up your mug of coffee and your food usually arrives in what feels like 2 minutes!  also: on our walk to get brunch, we passed by this silly mural, but when i went over to get my picture in front of it, i spotted a black cat in the window with dreamy green eyes.  as you can see, i was just a little excited…
as far as my clothes, i’m wearing two brand new pieces that came in the mail last week, and i can officially say that i’m addicted to shopping at asos online.  this mustard yellow trench coat could pass off as vintage, and the knit sweater dress is now the most comfortable dress in my closet. i want to wear them both every single day, which is a sign of a good purchase.

jack spade

this year, with the holidays around the corner, i’ve resolved to do all of my gift shopping ahead of time so i won’t have to do all that dreaded last minute scrambling. the only catch is that i’m far too busy these days to actually make it to the department stores and gift shops, so i’ve been doing what i do best: spending my time on the internet!  haha.  as in, i’ve been browsing the gift guides that have been popping up left and right.  and jack spade has the absolute best gift guide of the year.  hands down.  they’ve conveniently organized their best gift items by price point, but with a very cute angle. i think my favorite category would have to be: living with your parents. again.

penfield

a little while back, i styled up a rainy day outfit with a very cool penfield jacket i’d discovered browsing around on the asos website.  i had actually been familiar with the massachusetts based company for a number of year, since they’re basically a classic american brand with nice outdoorsy stuff.  and i suppose, being the outdoors enthusiast that i am, i’ve always been drawn to these types of classic brands.  they just seem like the most fashionable attire for sitting around a campfire in the cool autumn months with a mug of hot spiked cider in hand.  and while there are a number of brands that i love for this purpose, i’m particularly drawn to these easy and wearable fall pieces.
but i’m always on the hunt for more!  do you guys have any favorite outdoors companies?

decadence

calivintage: decadence
today i got dressed up all fancy-like in my fur stole, benetton sweater, and pretty new black lace dress. for the past several months, i feel as though i’ve gotten away from more feminine looks such as this one, but recently i’ve been getting more excited about layering sweaters and cardigans with pretty vintage (or vintage-inspired) dresses, warm tights, and tall heels.  something about this particular look made me feel especially rich and decadent and it offered me an air of sophistication for the day (at least in my head!).
now that i’m on the hunt for more vintage dresses, i decided to check out the local vintage boutiques over the weekend with the hopes of scoring some new loot!  but alas, i went home empty handed without even a simple cardigan to show for it.  i feel like i sometimes talk about scoring vintage like it’s no big thing.  but it’s amazing how much of a challenge it really can be to find good vintage dresses that are not only pretty, but that actually fit.  good thing i’ll always have next weekend!

cardigan shopping

it’s friday! which means for some of you out there, it’s payday.  and i don’t know about you, but i always seem to be in a rush to burn through my cash with some online shopping indulgence.  i’m starting to realize that i don’t have nearly enough comfy cardigans in my repertoire, so i decided to check out the scene.  and without a doubt, my two favorite haunts for sweater shopping are j.crew and madewell (which i know, are basically the same thing.)  i didn’t buy all of these babies, but you might see a few of these popping up in my outfits some time soon!

rise and shine

calivintage: autumn shades
one benefit of our recent time change is that the sun comes up nice and early to wake me up and get me ready for the day.  i don’t like the fact that it gets dark at 5pm, but the sunny mornings are something i really don’t mind since i’m now waking up around 7am most days.  on this particular morning, i was able to snag my boyfriend on a day off from work, so we decided to snap some photos in the sunrise.  we had so much fun playing with the sunlight, that we got a little carried away and took more photos than usual! which is actually a really nice way to start off the morning, especially when followed by a drive in the car blasting joni mitchell and singing along at the top of my lungs.

but onto my outfit: i just recently ordered this beautiful chiffon swiss dot dress from modcloth, and i think i’m in love.  the moment i pulled it out of the package, i knew is was going to be perfect.  it fits like a glove and i love the way the full skirt swishes around me when i move.  it really looks and feels just like a vintage dress, and most importantly, i just like the way it makes me feel.  don’t you love it when that happens?
