calivintage in zoe magazine

just a little something to brighten up a gloomy tuesday. i just found out that i was featured in the italian magazine, zoe. to be perfectly honest, i can’t remember if they interviewed me for this, and i actually don’t know what the article says! my italian friends will have to translate for me.

in other press, calivintage was also listed as a latina blogger you should meet over at the tiki tiki blog. you should definitely check it out if you’re interested in discovering new latina bloggers!

and i was the blogger of the day over at viva fashion blog back in december.

handy dandy

haha, i should turn this into one of those posters that says “i hate mondays.” though even with my bedhead and snuggie, i think garfield might still be a better representative of that sentiment! anyway, my mom gave me this vintage blanket cape for christmas along with another one in a brown hounds-tooth. i have to say, they certainly come in handy on those days when you would prefer to just stay in bed all day! i feel perfectly self-sufficient in this: invite me over to watch a movie, and i come with my own blanket, ready to curl up on the couch!

and why am i so tired, you might ask? well, i have been having the worst trouble getting to sleep these days. i find myself still awake with my mind racing a mile-a-minute at 3:30am. i have to force myself to lay down in bed and try to calm my mind. i think my brain is in overdrive with this whole new year ahead of me. what will come next? life feels so unpredictable sometimes. we never really know what lies ahead, even with all of our goals and hopes and aspirations. but i will say, that i am very excited about a lot of what’s in store. calivintage has been growing and changing and there are tons of new collaborations, promos, and events coming up! plenty to look forward to.

oh, and one last thing about my little outfit today: i decided to balance out the laid-back feel of the cape with some nice designer duds from steven alan. a sophisticated wool herringbone pencil skirt with a pretty little ascot blouse. i find it always helps to temper something casual with something a bit more structured. too bad i forgot to get a picture of it!

black out

lately, i have been finding a certain appeal in the all black (or almost all black) outfit. we often think of black as being this incredibly easy and wearable fall-back color. but try wearing black from head-to-toe and you’ve got an entirely new challenge. wearing something so simple can certainly take quite a bit of confidence! you can’t rely on color to make the statement, but instead, you need to let the textures and proportions do all the talking. (or at least most of it.)

before the winter is up, i’ve resolved to try this at least once. would you wear an all black ensemble?

weardrobe 100

i was totally gonna do an outfit post today, but then i realized i was much comfier in an outfit that i’d already worn on the blog before. such is the way on a lazy sunday. so instead, i will look back and reminisce over outfits of the past, like the ones featured in this super cute online magazine put out by weardrobe featuring the weardrobe 100 best looks of 2009. i am honored to be featured alongside so many other fashionable ladies.

and i know she already said something similar on her blog, but i have to say it was a nice little touch to find my photo right beside katy of kansas couture. she has incredible personal style and i am a huge fan of her blog. work it!

oh, and just for fun, one of my outfits also made it’s way to the weardrobe front page as well. aw, i feel special today.

take a hike

it’s sunday, folks. and i’ve decided to do something a little different and write a post about something that isn’t fashion/style-related. i don’t know why i hesitate to post this kind of content so much, but i’m going to try to come out of my shell just a tad and show you some of the other things in my life. but just a little. i’m still wary about posting anything too personal in public.

so behold: a close-up of yours truly wearing no makeup in millions of layers of practical clothes. i went on a little hike in mt. tamalpais yesterday. we had actually originally intended to do a much more vigorous trek, but i accidentally slept for twelve hours and didn’t wake up early enough to leave us with a sufficient amount of daylight for anything very strenuous. oh well! i felt kinda gross and awkward with so many layers of clothes on, and i spent a lot of time trying to think up the ideal outfits to wear whilst hiking. i have come up with some very good ideas, so expect more on that later!

anyway, while on our little hike, we came upon a fun little place called the nature friends tourist club. unfortunately, it was closed yesterday, so we’ll have to go back soon. in fact, we’ve decided to go back out there in a couple of weeks with a crew of friends. we’re going to bike up from san francisco and then do a little 45 minute hike up to the tourist club for a few beers before making the trek back out, and riding our bikes to tiburon to catch a ferry back to oakland. these are the absolute perfect day trips. a few months back, we did a similar ride with a group of friends and ended up at a bar in port costa. we actually took photos and recorded quite a bit of video from the trip. perhaps i’ll have to post that up on my blog, too.

i wanted my picture in front of this silly little cabinet. this is near the nature friends tourist club.

that’s my boyfriend making a sneaky little appearance.

you can’t tell from the photo, but that horizon line is actually the ocean!

the right trousers

i almost feel like i don’t even need to write anything in this little space beneath the photos, because they really do speak for themselves. and basically, i really need some high rise trousers in my life, with or without pleats, high-waters or rolled up at the cuffs. i love them all, and these fashionable ladies have mastered the look.

darling darling visits and an outfit

oh, hi guys! i’m just chillin on my roof with none other than the super awesome and totally adorable diane of darling darling. no big thing. she comes over sometimes to visit and get her hair cut by my friend and hairstylist, shannon dean of indie industries. we hang out and drink beers and talk about blog stuff. you know, the usual.

anyway, i thought it was a nice coincidence that we were both decked out in furs yesterday. i had actually already done a photo shoot for my outfit post before she came over, but when i saw how well our outfits went together, i dragged her up to the roof for more pictures. so yes, this post will be very heavy on the images. i couldn’t help myself! also, i hope diane doesn’t mind that i’m writing this, but i am going to tell you a fun little fact: you might think that i am tall looking at these photos, but i am only 5’5″. diane is 4’10”. many of us bloggers are a very small and rare breed.

so onto my outfit: i have still been slowly recovering from winter vacation/ a gnarly cold/ excessive new year’s festivities/ etc. and whenever i’m feeling less than capable of getting dressed, i find myself digging through my boyfriend’s closet to look for something comfy to wear. i am currently in love with his vintage levi’s blouse, and have been styling it up in slightly androgynous and super comfy looks. at the last minute, i decided to throw on this vintage raccoon fur that my mom gave me for christmas. i was a little hesitant to wear it at first, but it’s vintage, and i have to say it is the warmest and most comfortable thing i have ever wrapped around my neck.

oh yeah, and in other news, i got a new haircut. i guess it’s more of a trim, but i’m prepping myself to try out more of a bowl cut and then possibly transition into a pixie cut. i haven’t really decided. for some reason, i have the hardest time committing to a new cut!

almost back

so technically i’ve been back home for a few days, but today marks the day when i have to admit that while i still have a few weeks before the new semester at school starts, i no longer have any excuses to slack on the blog. which is unfortunate, considering that i slept for like 11 hours last night and woke up in a strange fog, having dreamt of an almost full day of productivity: i had written and prepared several posts for the blog in clear detail while sleeping. you can imagine my disappointment when i hobbled over to the computer to discover that none of these things had happened in reality.

so while i continue to recover from this cold that just doesn’t seem to want to quit, and from the weekend of partying despite my condition, i bring you some silly photos of me at a bar on the first day of my vacation. i thought it might be fun to post these here because i’ve really only ever posted outfit shots. so this is what i look like having a grand old time at mr. bings after modeling at a photo shoot for shannon at indie industries with jennie of going west and joey de ruy. (more on that later…)

top ten of two thousand and nine

well, it’s the last day of the year, and it looks like a little countdown is in order! these are my top ten favorite outfits of 2009. i tried to keep them generally in chronological order so i could see the progression from when i first started posting my outfits through now. to be fair, i don’t think i actually started blogging my outfits until sometime in the early summer, but i did post daily outfits on chictopia starting in february. i had a fun time browsing through my first images taken with my little point and shoot on my back porch, reminiscing about what was happening in my life during those times.

aw shucks. i guess i’m getting a little sentimental here. i have to say i’m really glad that i stuck with blogging and that i have met so many awesome people, both friends and acquaintances. i’ve been inspired in different ways by each and every one of my readers, whether from a nice comment, from browsing your blogs, or just knowing that you’re out there, taking the time to stop by. it’s helped me to grow in many ways and i’m truly excited to see where else it will take me in the new year!

alright, now wipe your eyes and go enjoy the holiday! i’m ready for more.
