outfit: cream puff

as my body has been rapidly changing, it’s pushed me right out of my comfort zone and challenged me to try dramatically different things. normally, i would see a silly romper like this hanging on the racks at a vintage shop and i wouldn’t even consider trying it on. it’s got no shape. not only that, but it’s just one giant ruffle after the next, exactly the type of volume that most girls have been conditioned to avoid for fear of adding bulk where we don’t particularly want it. but now that i basically have no discernible waistline, it’s not like i’m concerned about trying to achieve the coveted hourglass shape. so when i came across this cream puff of a romper, i decided, “what the hell? why not try it on?” and yep, that pretty much sealed the deal. it’s just about the most fun thing to wear ever. and i couldn’t care less that i basically look like a giant dessert.

in other news, i believe i am now somewhere between 21 and 22 weeks (he’s measuring large, so we suspect that i’m a week farther along that we had first calculated). i kinda can’t believe that the little mister in there is now measuring 10.5″ inches long from head to rump. or about the length of a large banana. haha, rump. and banana. pregnancy books use the silliest analogies and terminology to talk about babies. it’s kind of hilarious how each week you can track your baby’s growth by comparing him to a fruit or vegetable… and i am currently comparing myself to a cream puff.

nadinoo play by numbers

today we’re celebrating labor day here in the united states, but meanwhile in south africa, the talented nadia of nadinoo has just released her much-anticipated new collection, play by numbers! she’s back with a stunning collection of dresses and separates all hand sewn using seasonal liberty prints in 100% cotton. her clothes are just so pretty and easy to wear, exactly what i need more of in my life now that i’m living in such a hot clime. i am seriously swooning over the oopsy daisy dress, set to release with the rest of the collection this october!

minty fresh

despite normally being the type of person who can’t function without a cup of coffee in the morning, i haven’t been indulging in it much over the past 4.5 months because i have been told i should cut back for the sake of the little person growing inside of me. i didn’t have any coffee until about a month ago, but as time has gone on, i’ve gotten more comfortable with a weekly cup (or two). and of course, being that i am now a resident of sweltering hot los angeles, a nice cold brew is my new drink of choice. i made this little recipe and gif for the modcloth blog earlier this week and figured i might as well share it here because it’s basically the best summer beverage ever (after this drink, which i could also easily enjoy every day).

giantlion fall 2013

i had been eagerly anticipating the release of the giantlion fall 2013 lookbook after they posted a little preview on their facebook page, but somehow missed it in all of my baby madness this week! it’s been really fun watching this brand evolve over the past couple of years, and i must say, the new pieces are so elegant and understated (which is exactly what i look for in jewelry) and the photographs capture them so perfectly. in fact, everything looks so good that i am now faced with a very lucky conundrum: which piece do i want the most?!

vivetta fall 2013

while browsing the web, i came across the new vivetta fall 2013 collection and i think i’m in love. she’s continued with her iconic hand collars that we’ve seen the last few season, but this time, she’s added whimsical bows and red lip appliques to this very bold collection. there’s a huge range of fun and interesting silhouettes in this massive collection, meaning there’s definitely something for everyone. i’m actually having a hard time picking a favorite look, but if hard pressed to pick just one piece, it would probably be one of those daring ’60s-inspired shift dresses with scalloped edging down the front. and i can’t get over this model, doesn’t she look like a very tall, modern version of anna karina?

outfit: oh baby!

so i’m just gonna cut to the chase because it’s already pretty obvious… i’m pregnant! and not just a little bit. i’m kinda sorta already 20 weeks along, i.e. 4 1/2 months, i.e. halfway through my pregnancy! i didn’t mean to keep it a secret for quite so long, but life has been full of big changes lately what with packing up all of my belongings and moving my entire life from san francisco to los angeles. i spent almost three weeks staying in a hotel in burbank while commuting to work and spending all of my free time hunting for an apartment, and we just barely unloaded the uhaul truck into our new home last week. so in all of the chaos and excitement, i am only just barely getting back into the swing of things. and during that time my belly bump has begun to protrude! and my little baby dude is swimming around in there, practicing his ninja moves and getting ready for his arrival at the very beginning of january.

so now that we’re caught up to speed, here is my very first maternity outfit post. at this point, most of my clothes no longer fit my uncomfortably large bust-line (32g, anyone?), and even my oversized clothes are bursting at the belly seams. when i packed up to move, i kinda knew that most of my clothes would most likely be staying in those boxes for at least another six months. fortunately for me (and not so fortunately for my wallet), i get to have fun picking out new clothes and i’m back on a super 1960s kick, which is perfect because all of those a-line dresses and baby-doll silhouettes are just what i need to accommodate my rapidly expanding waistline.

lauren moffatt fall 2013

you may remember my photos from the lauren moffatt fall 2013 presentation back in february (see them here). well, today i thought i’d share my favorites from the pretty fall lookbook and a few more looks that weren’t featured in the presentation. the collection was inspired by a weekend away in the catskills of new york, and it’s got plenty of my favorite signature lauren moffatt looks: bright colors, fun prints, pretty lace details, and a perfect mix of textiles like silk, cotton, wool, and leather.

vintage shopping with refinery29

today i thought i’d share one of my recent posts on refinery29 my stylist. i went to one of my favorite shops, pretty penny vintage in oakland, to check out the selection and share a few of my vintage shopping tips. no, it’s not revolutionary by any means, but even a seasoned vintage shopping veteran like myself (wink!) can appreciate a few tips and hints as a little refresher before i venture out on a vintage expedition. there are so many factors to take into account that what should be a fun adventure can sometimes turn into a stressful task. so hopefully you’ll enjoy some of my tips right here!

you can see all of my refinery29 posts here.

hansel from basel summer 2013

i’ve been in southern california for a week now, and while i’ve been a bit too busy to do much exploring, i’ve found myself seeking out cool la brands to add to my list of things to do. which is how i found myself browsing through and old favorite, the la-based hansel from basel, where i came across these dreamy new photos for their summer 2013 collection. their cute socks designs are always so fresh and unique. once again reminding me that i really ought to try out more legwear!

betina lou fall 2013

since i teased you by mentioning the new betina lou fall 2013 collection in yesterday’s post, i figured i might as well share it with you! fall is creeping up on us and, as always, it’ll be here before we know it. and there’s something kinda fun about that back-to-school time of year when all of the stores have folders and crayons on sale. brings me back to those days when i would lay out my outfit the night before the first day of school. and while i’m still trying to collect clothes to keep me through the summer, it’s kinda fun to start planning for fall. and i just love the subtle mix of tartan and deep dark shades in classic silhouettes and luxurious fabrics like silk, boiled wool, and viyella cotton in this timeless collection.
