outfit: fake summer

calivintage: fake summer

after spending last week in warm and sunny los angeles, i was kind of dreading my arrival back home in the bay area, anticipating a very chilly reception upon my return. but to my surprise, i woke up yesterday morning to the most gloriously (albeit unseasonably) warm weather in oakland. it was so hot that i decided to pretend that i was on summer vacation, and threw on this ridiculously cute tropical print dress to celebrate. perhaps this has something to do with the fact that i just got the film developed from my hawaiian vacation back in july, and i was feeling a bit nostalgic. and i suppose the stars aligned on this opportunity, considering that i bought this dress last week on a whim, wondering how many months it would be until i would actually have the chance to wear it!

oh hello. i’m in redlands! i’m going to be working from los angeles all week, so i decided to come to town early this weekend to visit with family. these photos were taken by my brother after i woke up from a bbq induced coma yesterday afternoon, as we kicked around in my grandma’s backyard and around the neighborhood. i had originally purchased this marc by marc jacobs skirt with the intention of layering it up for cool weather, and was saving it in my closet for the perfect fall day. but when i was packing for my trip and i discovered that the highs would be reaching the 90s during my visit here, i realized that i would have to find a way to wear it for the “summer.”

i like that i ended up pairing it with an orange top while hanging out in redlands, since this little old town is known for it’s orange groves. well, at least it used to be back in the day. even my childhood home was surrounded by orange groves, but by now, most of them have been replaced by housing subdivisions. but it’s still nice to hold onto those memories of hot summer days with the smell of orange blossoms thick in the air…

outfit: fall uniform

calivintage: fall

i think this formula of a blouse worn beneath a simple shift or jumper might become my new fall uniform. there’s something so simple and utilitarian about the look (and just a little bit schoolgirl) that is feeling pretty much perfect these days. you can add a nice wool coat and a pair of tights if it gets too chilly, but you won’t be bored to death like you might with a one piece dress because you can always swap out any number of tops and jumpers in different colors and fabrics. and, of course, when you’re on a budget, it’s nice to be able to mix and match as much as possible!

i know most of the photos are in black and white, but i was quite pleased with the color combination of rust and pale pink. i’ve always liked the mixture of warm earth tones in the fall with a splash of bright pastel to keep things interesting. and i’m trying to play more with color these days, so it’s been fun trying to break free of my typical neutral tones. but i think what i loved the most about this outfit was the mixture of silk, velvet, and suede. just something about these fabrics that feels so perfectly luxurious, don’t you think?

as the sun began to set on our usual weekend walk around the neighborhood, brendan commented that he loves the autumn light. we looked up at the world around us and tried to observe just what makes it so different (and beautiful) in the fall. the air feels crisp and while the leaves certainly don’t display as many colors as they do on the east coast, they still add just a bit of depth and dimension to the landscape. and i love the light so much at this time of day, that of course, it was the perfect place to catch a few photos of my weekend wear.

i first saw this skirt back in february during a visit to the lauren moffatt studio. she pulled it out from the rack and chuckled that the inspiration for the collection was kinda like laura ingalls wilder on acid. i fell in love with the pretty, saturated colors on the spot, so of course, when the collection finally came out, i had to have it. it’s named after the song ‘tecumseh valley’ by towne’s van zandt, so i listened to the song as i got dressed, twirling around in the silk fabric paired with a cozy little sweater. the mixture of light and sound and fabric has certainly got me feeling like it’s fall in california.

i’m sure by now you’ve noticed: i have a thing for jump shots. i can’t remember when exactly it started. sometime in the past 3 years… (can you believe it’s almost been 3 years since calivintage started?!) i’ve always enjoyed infusing movement into my photos, and jumping just seems like a fun way to show it. it’s gotten to the point where i’m pretty sure almost every outfit post has at least one photo of me hopping about like a frog. and the other day, while out on my usual evening stroll, i got bit by the jumping bug and possibly got a bit carried away with my silly ‘poses.’ normally, these little bouts would be tucked away in the depths of my computer archives, hidden from the public in an attempt to cover-up my strange affliction. but today i thought i might as well have out with it and expose my curious hopping habits for all to see.

with the autumn equinox only a few days past, i am happy to report that as per usual, san francisco offered us a nice rainy day to welcome the new season. so of course, i took the opportunity to wear one of my new comfy cozy fall outfits while wandering about in the mountain view cemetery. the sky was perfectly gray and gloomy, and the earth was still moist from the showers. i wore a black dress for the first time in a long time, and i loved the depth that it added to my look. i know that a basic jersey wrap dress such as this is a no brainer for many, but in all my life i’ve never owned such an essential basic, so i was very pleased when karen kane offered to send one along for me to try out. it’s the type of thing that you can mix and match with any combination of things, and it’s so perfectly soft and stretchy that you could practically live in it. needless to say, i’m quite happy to finally have it in my wardrobe! and as you’ll see when you begin to scroll down, i clearly had a good time prancing around in my silly, preppy fox hunter outfit, as is evidenced by the number of pictures we snapped! yikes!

on saturday morning, i woke up bright and early with weekend plans to drive up to marin to enjoy the beautiful beginning of fall. i perched on my computer with a cup of coffee, as per usual, when an unexpected package arrived in the mail: this pretty pretty dress from nina of family affairs! i immediately threw it on and did a little dance in my apartment before heading out of town with brendan. we made our way to one of our favorite spots in san rafael, sol food. if you’re ever in the area, you need to stop by for the best puerto rican cuisine ever! this time, i tried ponche, a mix of iced tea and limeade, and i have been dreaming about it since! i need to head to the grocery store so i can make a huge jug of it to keep in my refrigerator, even if the weather is beginning to cool down!

then we meandered around the area, popping into local thrift stores and boutiques before taking a very scenic route partway up mt. tamalpais and through the california coastline. and, whenever we find ourselves up in the area, we always have to stop at another favorite restaurant, avatar’s! which, i know, as with sol food, i’ve mentioned it before, but you really have to try it if you find yourself in northern california. nothing beats their sweet potato punjabi enchiladas! and of course, we had to round out our very decadent day with a big cup of coffee for the drive home.

today i am interrupting your regularly scheduled nyfw programming to share a fun little outfit that i shot before i left for fashion week. today is the launch of the new karen elson for nine west vintage america collection, and i am pleased to be sharing one of her designs styled up in a very witchy outfit in honor of the occasion. these lace up boots definitely bring a bit of a ’90s grunge element to an outfit, and the shimmery black finish had me in the mood to conjure up a little black magic with darker colors and kitty heads. they’re definitely a fun pair of boots and i can already imagine up a few other ways to style them up!

one of the cool things about this collection (besides the fact that it was designed in collaboration with karen elson!) is that proceeds from the collection will support soles4souls, a charity that provides shoes to people in need. nine west has also let me know that beginning tomorrow, they will also be providing $1 to charity for each new facebook fan.

onto my outfit from day two here at new york fashion week. this is what i wore yesterday for another fun day. in the morning, i went to the rachel antonoff show to shoot behind-the-scenes video and interview rachel herself, the hair and makeup artists, and even tennessee thomas, who was the dj for the event (more to come later)! then i headed over to the gretchen jones presentation, and finished off the day at the lauren moffatt fno event.

i was very honored to have been on the roster for the event, and i can’t tell you how wonderful it was to meet all of the lovely ladies (and boys) who came out for the occasion. fashion’s night out can be a little crazy in new york, but this event was just right. it was in a small boutique with a cooler of beers and bbq hot dogs! definitely right down my alley. and of course, for the occasion, i had to wear my absolute favorite lauren moffatt dress. i know i’ve worn this dress on the blog before, but it’s really too good to share only once!

well, i successfully survived day one of new york fashion week! and here’s what i wore on day one. the rainy weather was a bit unexpected for me: when i checked the forecast before packing, there didn’t appear to be any threat of rain, but by the time i arrived, it was clear that we were going to be experiencing thunderstorms and several inches of rainfall. fortunately, i did manage to stuff my silly new raincoat (which i discovered reading le blog de sushi) into my luggage! i got a lot of compliments, despite the fact that i am essentially wearing a plastic bag. albeit a very retro fun and slightly chic one, haha! and it really was the perfect compliment to my pretty family affairs dress. and even more fitting were these epic hanging chairs in the main lounge at the lucky fabb conference. obviously a clear choice for an impromptu photo shoot.

and speaking of fashion week, stay tuned for a lot of posts. yesterday i went to the steven alan presentation and the rachel comey show, so more pictures are on the way! and than you to rebecca for taking these photos!
