at home. for whatever reason, i always forget that i can share photos of me in my natural habitat haha. if i think about it for a minute, i realize that i probably spend a lot more time at home than the average person. i work in the mornings while adam is at school, so you’ll usually find me enjoying my coffee and then getting to work at the computer. after school, it’s the lunchtime routine with adam and edie, then usually a mix of kid time and household stuff. it’s rather unglamorous, but i’d like to think i do it with style. since i spend so much time at home looking at these walls, i spend a good amount of that time planning, arranging, rearranging, trying to make it a pleasant space for me and the kids. there’s always more work to be done (which can be infuriating), but we’ve also come such a long way since we first moved in two years ago.

these photos also give you a better idea of why i dress the way i do. i was talking about comfort in my last outfit post, so here it is! i really like clothes that i can wash and wear a million times, that i can wear on a run to the hardware store and then pop in to the coffee shop for an afternoon date and still feel pulled together. and of course, that i can roll around in while playing with the kids.

and two new additions that are working perfectly in my wardrobe are these lyla crop tanks in sand and royal blue from sotela. they’re simple, but cute. and perfect for the really hot summer days we have ahead of us. they are made in los angeles out of 100% linen, which you know is my favorite thing. the brand was started by designer hanna baror-padilla who had always dreamed of starting a sustainable clothing line using locally produced eco-friendly fabrics. not only that, but she understands how frustrating it can be to find clothes that fit properly, so she’s designed all of her clothing with ease and comfort in mind. clothes that really move and breathe with you so that you can still wear them even as your body changes through weight gain, loss, pregnancy, illness. it’s a really thoughtful ethos that i think most of us can really appreciate. i know i certainly do!

outfit: comforts

calivintage - steller jay shop

The other day someone very kindly told me that I looked incredibly comfortable yet fashionable at the same time. It pretty much made my day because that’s exactly what I’m going for when I’m picking out new clothes to wear! I like fashion, but I live in the suburbs, so I’d feel a bit ridiculous stopping by the coffee shop or dropping off my kids at school looking like I’m walking down the street during NYFW or something. So I try really hard to find my middle ground. Clothes that look good and make me feel put together, but that are still 100% practical when my reality is that I work from home and spend about half of my day on the floor of the kid’s room getting covered in play-doh and mashed-up banana.

I shot these photos after spending the day at the spring carnival at Adam’s school on a ridiculously hot day. I volunteered in his class booth, a little ring toss game in a sweltering tent. I held Edie on my hip while watching Adam go up and down the bouncy slide. I ate lunch, and even climbed into bed with Adam to put him to sleep for his afternoon nap. And then I got up and snapped these pictures. It’s linen, so it wrinkles, but if it’s a good quality textile, then it’s the good kind of wrinkly. It keeps me cool on a hot day, but still gets me compliments from complete strangers, which is always such a delightful surprise.

And if you’re wondering, the pants are from Steller Jay in New York. I connected with shop owner Katherine on Instagram and we became fast friends over our love of vintage and lovely textiles. I highly recommend her shop because she carries a lot of my favorites!

outfit: oh vintage

calivintage.com

sometimes i think i can hardly call this a fashion blog because my outfits aren’t exactly fashion. i follow the trends in the way that i see them while scrolling through my instagram feed. and those trends certainly creep their way into my outfits by way of what is available at my favorite shops and boutiques. but i don’t necessarily strive to be trendy because it’s awfully hard (and expensive) to keep up, and i literally don’t have the time or money to do so without completely exhausting myself and ending up with that terrible not-good-enough feeling. who needs it?

so over time, i’ve really given up on fast fashion and embraced the idea of conscious consumerism. but of course, it’s not exactly as simple as telling everyone to drop $400 a single pair of pants made by hand in california. i think what a lot of people in “the fashion industry” fail to recognize is that it is an incredible privilege to be able to do so! the average person does not have the time or means to “shop ethically” or “shop small” because as romantic as it sounds to slowly pull together your dream wardrobe using natural fibers woven through artisanal looms, most people need to wear more than a single pair of pants. it’s complicated!

which is why i really can’t stress the importance of vintage enough! most designers have mood boards filled with vintage photos to serve as inspiration for their latest collections. and most thrift stores and yard sales have these beautiful gems hidden among the racks and tucked away in closets just waiting to be unearthed. i spend a ton of time hunting for the goods, hoarding away some of my favorites, but also selling a few items each week on my calivintage shop feed. if i were to sell this set i’m wearing right now, i would probably ask $80, which is on the high end of what i charge. that amount couldn’t even buy you an ethically made top, but when you’re looking at vintage, it can buy you an entire outfit. and if you’re doing the thrifting yourself, it could practically buy you a whole wardrobe! this vintage set was made in the usa with a natural, textured cotton gauze. a beautiful textile! and it’s a matching set, so you can wear it together like this or do the whole mix-and-match thing. endless wardrobe combinations!

i suppose i’m preaching to the choir with this information, but it’s something that is on my mind very frequently as a fashion blogger of sorts. or at least someone who has been a fashion blogger and who isn’t quite a mommy blogger, but not exactly certain what it even means to call myself a lifestyle blogger? whatever. here’s some photos of me wearing clothes.

calivintage x only child jumpsuit

you may remember right before the holidays, i released my very first design collaboration with only child! i’ve always wanted to design my own clothing, so this was a really fun and exciting opportunity. and this jumpsuit is what we came up with! though i can’t really take much credit because the design actually came about from the comments and feedback i received while sharing the whole process on instagram. if anything, it’s really more of a design collaboration with all of you! i was so uncertain on which direction to take that i put things up for a vote and the overwhelming response was for this jumpsuit design. picking the fabric was a tough choice, but we all agreed that denim would be a really great option because it’s durable and works for all seasons. case in point: i wore this layered over a turtleneck and paired with a wool jacket this winter. but now that it’s springtime and the temperatures are warming up, i’ve been wearing it on it’s own or layered under a lighter jacket.

the other detail is that i’ve lost quite a bit of weight since i shared photos of it several months back, yet it still fits great! the shape has so much ease and flexibility that it truly does work for any size. and i’m just so proud to be able to say that i had a hand in designing it. but, all good things must come to and end, and this piece is only available for a limited time. so if you had your eye on it, now is the time to snag one before they’re gone forever. and definitely check out the rest of the only child spring offerings as well!

outfit: the rachel pally wrap dress

calivintage - rachel pally wrap dress

ah, the wrap dress! it’s a total classic, yet i don’t think i’ve ever worn one before! it’s a wardrobe basic that i’d just never considered, but now that i have one, i’m beginning to see the light. this particular spaghetti wrap dress is by rachel pally. it comes in a longer length with a raw hem that you can cut to your preferred length. i don’t tend to wear maxi dresses, so my first inclination was to trim it to midi length. but then i thought it might be nice to dress this up for a fancier occasion, so i left it at a maxi length and just tied the ends in a knot for more of a casual look. i was going for a weekend brunch with the in-laws type of look. but it’s also totally something you can wear alone to an outdoor wedding or even as a bridesmaids dress. you see what i mean about versatility?

speaking of rachel pally, i had heard of the brand before because i think she dresses a lot of celebrities, but what i didn’t know is that her clothes are actually made in los angeles! she mostly does casual chic modal jersey (which is incredibly soft and luxurious), but this season, she also released a small linen collection! and you know that’s right down my alley. there is a perfect reversible linen wrap dress, linen overalls, and a swingy mini dress, all of which i could see fitting right into my own wardrobe.

outfit: found company giveaway!

calivintage + found company

we’re in the middle of a heat wave in the winter, and while i know i should concerned because global warming is real, it’s hard not to enjoy such pleasant weather after so many cold, rainy days this season! and spring really is right around the corner. when i first picked up this jumpsuit, it was still too cold to wear it. so of course i was so happy when i could finally throw it on with a pair of heels and run outside to soak up some some. it is so perfectly summery, and so easy to wear. definitely part of the “mom uniform” in terms of comfort and functionality. and the washed denim fabric is insanely soft. softer than i ever would have guessed just looking at the product photos.

oh, and for those of you who are afraid to wear white, there is no secret behind keeping it clean. i just think of my white clothes as a painters uniform or a utility coverall– i find a nice sturdy fabric and just wear it and let it get dirty and stained. to me, it adds character. much like a leather bag or a pair of worn-in sneakers– or a marble countertop.

but enough of my rambling and on to the good stuff: i’m hosting a giveaway with my friends at found company! you can enter here for a chance to win a $250 store credit towards anything in the shop! it’s a small, woman-run business stocking some of my favorite women’s wear and kids clothing brands, including vintage and men’s clothes, too!

the plunge with third love

calivintage - third love perfect contour plunge bra

if you’ve followed my blog for a long time, then one thing you may have noticed about me is that i hardly ever wear something low cut. it’s funny, because i think a lot of people assume it has something to do with modesty. but if i may be frank, it’s because i have really big boobs. my size fluctuates a bit, but i’m currently fitting into a 32F. and i know this probably sounds like sacrilege, but to be completely honest, i do not love it. and i am forever envious of my smaller busted friends who talk about the liberation of going braless– and wearing all sorts of revealing clothes while doing so. unfortunately for me, that is literally not possible– especially because i’m still breastfeeding, but also because it is not a comfortable (or socially acceptable) option for those of us who are naturally very well-endowed.

i tend to wear full-coverage bras with lots of support to hold me in place, to push everything upwards and inwards– and out of sight. it’s never particularly bothered me because in many ways, it’s just how i feel more comfortable. but lately, i’ve been itching for a change. maybe it’s because i’ve gotten older. or maybe it’s because i’ve had two kids and i just don’t feel the same way about my body as i used to. maybe it’s the patriarchy getting me down, but what they heck? why not show a little more skin every once in a while?

so this season, i challenged myself to try some new clothes. i picked out a few new things for spring, including this reversible tank top with a deep v that can be worn in front or in back. i thought i would just wear the v in the back, but then i discovered the new thirdlove perfect contour plunge bra.  i often choose clothes with more coverage to avoid showing any lace or straps, but if you’re wearing the right bra, who’s to say it’s such a bad thing to get a little peek of an elegant detail? the perfect contour plunge has an elegant sheer mesh overlay along the front, and most importantly, it is made with super-soft memory foam cups that provides a very natural lift that is universally flattering, even for someone with an F cup like me. it is very soft and comfortable, while still actually providing support. and dare i say, i might be liking it even better than my usual full coverage bras. it’s given me the freedom to change things up with my wardrobe, and it’s made me realize that there are other ways to be comfortable in a bra that don’t involve always being covered up!

shop third love and find the perfect bra for your body. use the fit finder and try before you buy!

outfit: blluemade

calivintage + blluemade

i’m sure by now you know all about my dedication to linen. over the past several years, it has become a prominent textile in my wardrobe for a number of reasons. for starters, it’s a much more sustainable material than cotton because it requires far less pesticides to be grown. it also gets softer with each wash, and is incredible comfortable and breathable. it’s typically considered a summer material, but it comes in all different weights, making it a practical choice for all seasons, especially if you live in california.

which brings me to blluemade. just launched earlier in 2016, the brand sources high-quality linen from belgium, and designs and manufactures all of their garments here in the united states. the husband and wife team behind the brand both come from backgrounds in art history and philosophy, and they’ve joined forces to create such an elegant and timeless collection. they are both huge fans of indigo, and are inspired by vintage workwear, which are two things i absolutely love. so of course you know i’m a huge fan. i’m wearing their modern smock shirt and wrap skirt, which look great together, but are also really fun to mix and match with your existing wardrobe.

the best part is that everything on the site is currently 30% off with code ‘FEB30’ from now until the end of february! after that, these pieces won’t be back, so hop to it while the deal is still on!

outfit: lacausa

calivintage + lacausa clothing

can you believe it? i’m not wearing blue! i always always always fall back on my trusty blues, so i’m feeling rather proud of myself for wearing a different color haha. in the past, i’ve shied away from greens out of fear that they weren’t “flattering” against my pale olive skin, but that’s just silliness. i hate the idea of avoiding things because of silly “rules.” if you like something, you should wear it. and i’ve been drawn to all sorts of different shades of green lately. perhaps this is the color of the year somehow sneaking an influence on me? or perhaps it’s because i just desperately need to break free from my endless stream of blues?

anyway, if you’re really worried that a color won’t work for you, just keep it away from your face and/or try some lipstick or blush to balance it out. i did both of those things with this outfit. you can barely tell, but i’m wearing a peachy shade of lipstick from my new make beauty celeste e verde palette. that and the peachy sunglasses seems to do the trick!

the t-shirt and the pants are from lacausa clothing. in spanish, lacausa means “the cause” and this la-based brand has made sustainability and ethical conditions their cause. they carefully select fabrics for both ease and comfort, without losing sight of their ethical stance within the industry. and they’re totally affordable! sometimes it seems that these things don’t go hand in hand, but they do at lacausa! you can select from more timeless basics like what i’m wearing today, or you can pick something a bit more bold, all without having to save up a months worth of wages just to buy it.
