ll bean bags

of the many essential wardrobe items i’ve resolved to update in my closet this fall, handbags are near the top of the list (right up there with coats). they’re the type of piece that i often sorely neglect. an afterthought in most outfits and something that i just hope matches with the rest of what i’m wearing as i dash out the door. one reason for this is that they tend to be one of the more expensive purchases since they’re usually constructed out of giant pieces of leather (duh). and while i’ve had good luck finding vintage coach purses at thrift shops and taking my hand refurbishing them, there are only so many vintage coach purses a girl can own before it’s time to branch out into the grown up world of purchasing handbags.
so today i present to you one of my favorite options from an unlikely retailer, ll bean. i’ve actually written about ll bean before, back in the spring when they came out with their first ll bean signature collection: a heritage collection with updated pieces pulled from the old pattern archives. and i’m happy to see that they’re back at it for fall with plenty of vintage-inspired options. and the handbags, well, i want them all! but what’s better than just the design is the fact that ll bean is also a green business that cares about the environment, which is always a plus for a veteran thrifter like myself.

yes, i am in love with this peach dress. i think this is the fourth time i’ve worn it since i got it last month, but i don’t care. it’s such a versatile piece that each time i’ve worn it, i’ve been able to come up with a different look. today i was celebrating the late summer that’s finally arrived in the bay area with temperatures reaching up over 90 degrees. i know i’ve talked a lot about the weather lately, but if you live in the area, you know what i’m talking about! i’ve spent far too many summer days in front of the space heater wrapped in a big sweater this summer, so i’m glad to be able to go out into the hot sun and even get a little sweaty. that’s what popsicles are for, after all!

dress: american apparel lace chiffon dress

paul smith spring 2011

you may recall my series of posts from the summer dedicated to the stylings of teddy girls from the 1960s. i put together two outfits here and here, inspired by these amazing photos by ken russell. so it probably comes as no surprise that i was absolutely smitten with paul smith’s latest women’s collection with it’s separates borrowed from the boys and those perfect pompadour poufs! i also like the playful addition of a few girly prints and the amazing and unexpected color combinations. throw on those super cool cat glasses and it’s pretty much inspiration for days.
in fact, i’ve already resolved to grow the front and top of my pixie cut so that it’s long enough to do a style just like this! while i won’t be trying out all of the looks from the collection, i didn’t have a hard time picking out several favorites.

cycle chic sunday: sweet setup

after recently going on a short weekend bike ride from pleasanton to sacramento along the river delta, i started thinking about the ideal way to set up my bike to carry the few items of food and clothing that i would need for an overnight camping trip. when i went on the bike tour along the california coast, i knew that i would need to be fully loaded with huge panniers and tons of supplies. but when you’re doing a very light trip, it’s best to keep things as small and light as possible. so i imagined up a set of smaller, more lightweight panniers and decided that a front basket would be nice for keeping a tote bag full of items for easy access: camera, ipad, snacks, a beer.
one quick internet search later and i found my ideal setup! brooks happens to make the perfect matching set of waxed canvas roll up panniers along with a classy wire basket and a tote bag that fits perfectly inside. (though i would definitely put these on my road bike rather than my cruiser so i could actually conquer the hills!) better start saving up my pennies for the next ride!

simply dressing

calivintage: odds and ends
one on particular day during my trip to new york for fashion week, i was feeling a little bit less than stellar adjusting to the time change. so i fell back on this simple formula of wearing big statement sunglasses and big chunky platforms with a cute summer dress. it never fails and it’s easy enough to bring when you’re trying to pack light. although i will admit, i probably packed a little too light this time around. i didn’t even bring a jacket, and it wasn’t nearly as hot as i thought it would be!

so this is what i wore to spend my day at the ifb conference. clearly, i was experiencing the full effects of jet-lag considering that my dress was on crooked the entire day and i think my slip was bunching up in odd places. i didn’t even notice in the frenzy and excitement of seeing so many bloggers together in one room! this is also the outfit that i wore for a guest post featured on what i wore. so go check it out to see the post!

dress: i’m going to decline from stating because it ripped after the first wear!

meet me in the park

calivintage: blogger meetup
over the past couple of seasons, new york fashion week has become an increasingly popular event in the “blogosphere,” if you will. if you’re fortunate enough to wrangle yourself a ticket and a place to stay, then you can probably count on spending even more cash on attending conferences and taking expensive cab rides to various events! it’s certainly fun, but it can also be overwhelming, intimidating, and expensive! so it was quite nice that rebecca of the clothes horse got the idea to host a “renegade blogger meet up” during fashion week. true, you still had to be in new york to attend, but the idea was just to facilitate a time and space for bloggers to hang out and meet each other without all of the hype. and i must say, it was a nice break from the madness to just hang out in the grass and chat with some cool kids.
i headed out to the park with rebecca by my side and we were soon accompanied by a slew of bright young bloggers! i got to catch up with jessica of what i wore, which i try to make a tradition whenever i visit new york because she’s such a positive and inspirational blogger buddy! i also got to sit and chat with hannah and landon who were so delightfully friendly and down-to-earth that i wish i could have spent more time with them! and i met a lovely new blogger friend, emily of it girl rag doll who was sweet and pie and had the cutest new york accent! and of course, since we had a big bunch of red balloons, i had to take the opportunity to snap some silly photos with them. i only wish i had been better about snapping pictures of all of the rest of the lovely ladies who attended.
