calivintage + LOFT

today i am very pleased to announce that calivintage has teamed up in collaboration with LOFT as a guest blogger and stylist on the live.love.LOFT. blog! all month long, you’ll be able to see some of the outfits i’ve put together using loft items that i’ve hand picked to style up with items in my own wardrobe, along with other fun surprises at live.love.LOFT.

i’m sure some of you have already noticed that loft has been collaborating with different bloggers for the past couple of months. jessica of what i wore and joelle and noel of the owls are not what they seem recently wrote for them, and i am honored and thrilled to join their ranks and try my hand at guest blogging for the first time. it’s always fun to try something new, and i’ve spent a couple of weeks now figuring out just how to bring my own personal calivintage twist to the classic new york label, and i’m really excited to share it with you!

having said that, things will be pretty much the same here at calivintage, but you can keep up with my guest posts by visiting live.love.LOFT.

the lost coast

for this week’s installment of cycle chic, i thought i might share some old photos from a bike tour i went on waaay back in 2007. though i should probably give you a disclaimer: i wasn’t very chic on this ride. just bike shorts, sandals, and tank tops on this ride. yep, this was before i started my blog and before i got a fancy digital camera. the photo quality isn’t the best, but i wanted to show you what a bike tour looks like! for this particular trip, me and my partner started our ride in arcata, ca near the northern border of california, and ended up in bodega bay, just north of san francisco. we would ride between 40 – 60 miles per day carrying all of our own supplies and stop at state parks to camp for the evening.

anyway, we’re planning a similar trip at the end of august, but i think we’ll be starting up around portland this time. and since i’ve had more experience doing these types of rides now, i’m excited to bring along a laptop computer and my fancy camera to blog about the trip from the road! and this time i hope to share some pointers for chic outfits to wear while still being comfortable enough for camping and riding so many hours on a bike. looking back at these photos and reminiscing about that trip have gotten me seriously excited for the next one! i can’t wait!

we began the trip in arcata, ca.

the world’s largest hammer.

we had planned to camp at the humboldt county fair grounds one evening. to our surprise, the humboldt county fair was in full swing. bonus!

weeee!

i loved you and your apple pies and beer in plastic cups and carnival rides.

aha, so that’s why they call it ferndale.

tee hee. cows.

we opted to ride along the lost coast for this ride. it was a particularly grueling and intense ride, but the views once we reached the short were worth it.

after a seriously hard day of riding, we were rewarded with freezing cold showers.

a morning cup of coffee is crucial.

and back up over another mountain. it’s a good feeling to get to the top.

it was particularly fun when we made it to the avenue of the giants. lots of fun tourist attractions!

after so many days of riding, sometimes you need to treat yourself to a junk food feast!

ah, the beautiful california coastline.

one of the things that’s most inspiring to me about this particular outfit is her use of color. i don’t know why i would never think to combine those two shades of blue and green, but it is so artful and fresh to me! and of course this makes me really want a perfect vintage romper!yishyene: listening to justin beiber as i type this.. nooo
i love the romantic combination of lace tights with a pretty floral tempered by tough boots and seductive fur! this outfit is a total win.

team peter stigter
i really love the way this is basically a simple and preppy casual look: it’s an oxford blouse with a sweater and jacket, but it’s a good reminder that you can still have a bit of fun with printed jeans. i may not go for the checkerboard pattern, but i could see trying this with a pair of fun floral jeans!

fashion forestry: trendy friday hidden prettiness
i have to tell you, i’m pretty much crazy about every single outfit this darling wears! she clearly has the most amazing and quirky vintage wardrobe of anyone i know. this is actually one of her more toned down looks, but i just love that amazing dress with a pretty pink topper.

curious fancy
i was tipped off to this new blog by one of my favorite vintage sellers and tumblr ladies, lisa zain of vintage shoe love. i can’t get over her perfect romper paired with those sweet mary janes. perfect summer simplicity!

easy fashion: karen, rue tiquetonne, paris
this lovely lady is making me have second thoughts about transitioning to a pixie cut. she has the perfect bob! and i love her inky palette with thick rimmed glasses and beautiful layers. you can’t notice at first, but she’s added tons of texture and interest in the little details. just check out those serious gloves.

and the winner is…

siri is the winner of a $250 gift card to her choice of beso.com stores! she was selected as the winner using the random number generator at random.org and i couldn’t be more excited for her since i’ve been a fan of her blog for some time now. for reals! congrats siri!

thank you so much to everyone who entered the contest, but no worries if you didn’t win this time! there are many more opportunities to win great prizes each week thanks to the sponsors of calivintage.

tattoo party, part 1

if you follow me on twitter and tumblr, then you may have already seen my little bursts of excitement over an upcoming event! but before i begin, i suppose i should probably give you a bit of a disclaimer: do not try this at home, kids. your mom and dad will be pissed. yesterday i gave diane of too much too young a tattoo. she had never gotten one before, but had expressed interest in getting one. all she wanted was a row of 3 little buttons going down her wrist. i told her that i had given a few tattoos before, so we made plans and voila!

i am not going to tell you how to do it, but it’s pretty basic. you just need a few simple supplies. booze is pretty much required for all parties involved, but unfortunately we may have overdone it juuuust a little bit. it was sleepy time much to early for us last night, so i haven’t completed my work just yet. in fact, after i write this post, i am going to get to work finishing it up and i will show you pictures of it once it is complete! but for now, i thought i would show you how our day went yesterday.

preparations.

one of my besties, scott, came over to watch. my kitty wanted his chow fun!

getting in the mood. we had to shake diane’s nerves!

supplies. we wanted four loko for the occasion, but had to settle for sparks.

the artist and canvas.

scott has a lot of stick and poke tattoos. this one is my favorite.

he also has a really beautiful california tattoo. this one was professionally done, of course.

brendan came home and he was wearing this cute shirt that was screen printed by a friend of ours.

antics ensued, but unfortunately i can’t show you the rest of the photos.

i love the way that even though i only walked several blocks away from home today, my outfit pictures look like they were taken while i was on vacation in some faraway place. perhaps, florida? though i can’t really say since i’ve never actually been there! anyway, i’m just standing in front of lake merritt today. though despite the name, it’s actually an estuary, which attracts a large number of migratory birds each season. we had hoped to get some shots of different birds in the area, but the light outside was a bit harsh, so we sought refuge in a nearby botanical garden.

and i know it’s already been a year and a half since it first came out, but i’m still finding myself heavily influenced by the charles anastase spring 2009 collection. hence, the large vintage glasses and straw boater hat with socks and platforms. sometimes i really like to fix up a simple dress such as this with lots of fun accessories to give it a bit more personality.

the pixie

i must say, i am long overdue for a trim to my pixie cut! one thing about having a very short cut is that it requires a lot of maintenance to keep it at the perfect length, since only a small amount of growth will make a big difference. but the daily care is quite simple since it usually requires very minimal styling, if any, and you’ll be sure to have a healthy head of hair since there are only a few inches of it!

so since i’m thinking of just exactly how i should trim my hair, i thought i would post some lovely inspiration of the classic pixie cut. i think it’s easy to think that all pixie cuts were created equal, but as you can see, there are plenty of interesting variations on the look. now i just have to decide which direction to take!

above: i can no longer remember the source on the top two images, but i believe they’re both by the sartorialist, michelle williams, audrey tautou, cecilia mendez, and a bumble & bumble cut.

calivintage in chic magazine

just stopping in on a lazy sunday afternoon to share with you a little feature! the swedish magazine, chic, has written a little blurb about me in their latest issue! i was very pleased to receive my copy in the mail yesterday and it was fun flipping through the pages to see what it was all about. it seems similar to the types of magazines you might read about celebrity fashion while waiting in the line at the grocery store, and i was surprised to see that there were lots of features about american television and movie stars.

anyway, i can’t read swedish, but one of my lovely readers gave me a rough translation of what it says, which is basically that i write a blog with a mix of vintage and modern styles.

carried away

i know i promised my guide to buying used and vintage bikes, but it’s taking me a bit longer than i expected to find actual pictures of all of my bike picks, so while i keep working on that post behind-the-scenes, i decided to share some cool bike accessories with you on this cycle chic saturday. after writing this post about my favorite fashionable mixte and dutch style bikes under a grand, i discovered another company called public bikes, which has become a fast favorite! they were a sponsor of bike to work day here in the bay area, so naturally, i had to check them out. i was quite delighted to discover that not only do they have a beautiful selection of fashionable and functional bikes, but they also have a really great web shop with lots of nice bike accessories!

in particular, i am loving their range of nice baskets and bags. the rear basket has a quick release with a handle, so it doubles as your shopping basket on quick trips to the grocery store. in addition, they have really lovely brooks roll up panniers, and a canvas pannier that doubles as a messenger bag! and for those of you concerned with safety, i quite like their sleek nutcase helmets.
