boss of the plains

today i have two sets of photos to share that have been giving me ample inspiration to try a new style of hat. i must preface this by telling you that i really don’t know much about hats except that they go on top of your head and that sometimes they look cool. so i did a bit of research after putting together these two little galleries for you, and discovered that there are many different kinds of hats being represented here. we’ve got a cowboy hat, a homburg, several fedoras, possibly a cordobés, maybe a trilby, and some other hats that i can’t even identify, which i will deem “fashion hats.”

i also discovered that there is a hat style called the boss of the plains, which is the predecessor to the cowboy hat. sweet name if you ask me. though i suppose the name of the style doesn’t matter, and the most important thing is that it looks good. these all look great, so what i’m saying is that i’m pro hats. of all kinds. and right now, i’m especially appreciating hats that would traditionally be considered men’s hats. definitely keeping my eye out at the thrift shops!

i wear my heart on my…

i’ve been following the italian label vivetta for the past few seasons now, and while it’s often been a little hit or miss for me, they always have a handful of pieces with the cutest details and the perfect touch of whimsy. fall 2010 is no exception with the return of those darling sheer blouses with strategically placed hearts! and my heart is all aflutter over those pretty shoes, too! that and the vintage inspired separates, and i think i’m in love.

and just to refresh our memory, here is a link to my post on their current spring collection. when checking their revamped site, i was happy to discover links to retail shops where you can buy their pieces. the i love you blouse is currently for sale, but i think it’s a bit out of my price range at over $200. sighs.

link roundup

this week, my eye was drawn towards the great outfit posts on some of my favorite blogs!

what i wore: winter white hymnal
jessica knocked it out of the park in this winter ensemble. i love the way she plays with the reds and pinks in that beautiful scarf.

pandora: chain gang of love
i love the icy palette and subtle details of this pretty outfit. and i can’t believe her dress is from h&m!

sacaton june: handmade black and white dress
i love reading this blog for updates on new sewing projects. sacaton june shows us her latest hand-made dress in classic black and white with the most interesting collar!

kennedy holmes: the prodigal blogger
kennedy stuns us with her simple color palette and the most incredible pair of vintage shoes everrrr. she has some of the most amazing thrift finds of anyone i know!

the owls are not what they seem: joelle van dyne is love
on the topic of shoes, i’m practically drooling over joelle’s new miu miu’s! and i love the way she coordinated them with a perfect mix of prints.

the clothes horse: as soon as go kindle fire with snow
i may be a little selfish in this pick since i was also the photographer of this set, but rebecca’s outfit is perfectly stunning. and i just love it that her outfit matches her beautiful hair!

cabiria!

a few images of inspiration from le notti di cabiria, starring giulietta masina and directed by her husband, federico fellini. yes, we all know and love the works of fellini (i could go on for days), but today i wanted to recognize the incredible talent of giulietta masina. she has the most incredible range of facial expressions and a knack for hilarious physical humor. she’s been called the female version of charlie chaplin, but her talent stands alone. her character in nights of cabiria is at once completely innocent and childlike while retaining a fierce individuality and independence with a spirit that is never broken. if you haven’t seen it, i highly recommend!

mystery at lafayette house

with new york fashion week already over and london fashion week drawing to an end, i can’t help but spend an unhealthy amount of time pouring over all of the new fall 2010 collections. i have a few obvious favorites: hello, marc! his collections seriously reminded me why i love him so much, and right when i was beginning to feel only lukewarm about his styling! thank you! but i digress. i actually have something a tad bit more interesting than your usual runway fare:

did you see any photos from the rachel antonoff fall 2010 collection? such a fun presentation with pretty ladies wearing adorable vintage-inspired outfits inside an old mansion! apparently, the theme was “mystery at lafayette house” and the guests were presented with a series of chic crime scenes. attendees had to become the detectives to solve the mystery and identify the murderer. seeing presentations like this really make me wish i was actually invited to fashion shows! maybe next fashion week…

the chictopia 10

a little over a week ago, i had the honor of attending the chictopia10 conference as one of the winners of the chictopia10 contest along with this incredible group of beautiful young women. each girl represents her own unique individual style and has a great appreciation for the supportive and positive chictopia community.

i have to admit, the first night we were all at the hotel, i ran into lydia in the lobby and ran gave her a big bear hug before i even stopped for a proper introduction. i have been a fan of some of these girls for a long while, so it only added to my appreciation of getting to meet them all along with the wonderful women who run the site. i definitely recommend that you take the time to check out all of their blogs because many of them have really incredible coverage of all of the events with lots and lots of photos!

unexpected favorites

it’s funny, this year i was actually in new york for fashion week and i probably saw less of the collections than i usually do. this is mostly due to the fact that i usually just view the collections in photo galleries from the comfort of my own home. and while in new york, i spent most of my time running around from place to place with hardly a moment to eat or sleep! but now that i am home, i’ve had a few days to catch up on all of the shows, and i have to say i have been delightfully surprised by some unexpected new favorites. case in point: peter jensen fall 2010.

i don’t think i’ve ever even looked at any of his collections before this year, but i have to say i am absolutely smitten with these vintage-inspired schoolgirl looks (especially after my infatuation with the equally fun, collegiate looks at proenza schouler pre-fall 2010). anyway, i read that this collection was inspired by the film adaptation of the prime of miss brodie jean. unfortunately, this reference is lost on me since i haven’t seen the movie or read the book! so i’ll add those to my list, and in the meantime, i will appreciate these perfectly wearable separates in quirky color combinations topped off by the prettiest little hats!
