over the weekend, i decided i wanted to get out of town. so with no particular plan in mind, we hopped in the car on saturday morning and headed north. we started our day with a bit of shopping first in corte madera, then in petaluma, and finally managed to wander all the way out to bodega bay to lay on the beach and cool our warm bodies with the ocean breeze. the temperature difference between the coast and the inland areas was like night and day, and i was happier than ever that i had a change of clothes in the car because i started the day in a sun dress, sweating in the summer heat, and ended it wrapped in multiple sweaters watching the seagulls float past in the misty ocean breeze.

these bleary-eyed outfit photos were snapped at the end of our day after waking up from a nap on the beach after the crowds of people had already packed up their blankets and headed back to the warmth of their cars and beach house rentals. we, of course, followed suit and headed home watching the sun set over the ocean as we drove along highway 1.

as much as i’m influenced by everything 1960s, sometimes i just can’t help but fast forward a decade or two and get all decked out in ’70s and even ’80s-inspired looks. in particular, i just can’t seem to resist a good pair of high-rise flares. so when dittos denim contacted me and asked if i’d like to put together an outfit featuring a pair of their iconic jeans, it was pretty much a no-brainer. they’ve recently revived a number of styles from their vintage archives, and this particular pair was perfect for pulling on with a soft and stretchy vintage t-shirt and my beloved kork-ease wedges for an easy, retro look. i mean, i’m essentially wearing a t-shirt and jeans, but adding in those vintage elements really help to add interest to a simple outfit. the perfect way to embrace the summer without a ton of fuss.

just a few snaps from a walk around my neighborhood on a particularly sunny day. this is another one of those outfits that i wear pretty often, but don’t usually photograph. i could live in these jeans if i could get away with it because they’re super soft and stretchy with a perfect high rise. i remember when i was in high school, i used to have this pair of men’s action slacks. they were comfort jeans for old men that had a tab waist with stretch denim. i was a skinny kid and they were regular men’s sizes, so wore them slung awkwardly at my hips, but i just loved them because they were this perfect baby blue. now i just like to refer to all of my stretch jeans as action slacks, though i suppose these are slightly more fashionable…

outfit: wear to work

i know we’re still riding the high of a three day weekend, but that also means that tuesday = back to the grind. so today i decided to share one of the typical work outfits i’ve been wearing lately. it usually consists of some formula of button-up shirt tucked into high rise pants with a practical low heel. i work in an office most days of the week, and the air conditioner is always a bit too chilly, so i’m also often wearing a big sweater or coat despite whatever the temperature outside.

in other news, my hair is getting crazy long. i cut my bangs (a bit too short and not quite straight, oh well), but the rest of it is now reaching a little bit past my shoulders. it’s getting to the length where it sorta swishes around in the wind and gets in my face when i’m trying to eat dinner, but i think i like it longer? i always like to change things up, so it’s gonna be fun to see how long i last until i’m chopping off more than just my fringe…

the past couple of weeks, i have been all about dressing a bit like a tomboyish nerd. as one example, i have been wearing these urkel pants as frequently as i can without getting funny looks from my co-workers wondering if i’ve been doing my laundry on the regular… i happened to be wearing this exact getup with a navy tank top when a package arrived from my friends at tulle clothing and out came this darling lace crop top. i threw it on and that is how this particular look was born. i have to say, i’m kinda really happy that crop tops are making a resurgence these days. i don’t think i will ever waltz around baring my midriff, but pull one on with high-rise anything, and they’re pretty much perfect. they remind me of cute vintage playsuit sets from the ’40s and ’50s with little matching shorts and/or capris. perfectly summery and just a little bit sporty.

anyway, this is what i wore on a very busy saturday. we woke up bright and early to go to a used car sale held by our local credit union because our lifestyle has recently dictated that we need another car. not my number one choice, but sometimes it’s necessary, so we set out to find something fuel-efficient and low-emissions while still in our budget. not particularly easy since even used hybrids can be super expensive, but we managed to find a fancy hybrid camry that made us both feel so very responsible and grown up. after signing all the papers, we headed back home to meet with friends in the morcom rose garden by my house (where these photos were snapped) and ended the evening enjoying beers and shooting-the-shit, mourning the loss of our youth and celebrating our impending entrance into real adulthood, hah!

outfit: polaroid

calivintage: instamatic

i’ve had so much fun snapping photos with instagram these days, that i recently found myself reminiscing about those pre-digital camera days of my youth when we took pictures of birthday parties and vacations with a silly little 35mm point-and-shoot camera and our trusty polaroid instamatic. the latter of which i actually kept well into adulthood until it fatefully exploded in the hot trunk of my car. and then polaroid cameras sort of disappeared for a little while, and then reappeared on the market when i wasn’t looking. not sure how long they’ve been around now, but i just picked up a polaroid 300. it snaps these tiny little pictures similar to the fuji instax, and i’ve been carrying it around with me in my backpack, only to keep it there because i’m somehow stingy about paying over $1 per photo when i can take pictures with my iphone for “free.” this is especially funny since i’ve been known to blow obscene amounts of cash on photo booths…

anyway, i finally stocked up on film and decided i might as well have some fun with it.

isn’t this always the way it goes? the moment the weather gets crazy nice (read: 70 degrees and up in february), i come down with a cold that just won’t quit. but when you get sick with this damn virus, there’s not much you can do but wait it out. so i’ve been making the best of it by alternating between long naps and short stints outside to enjoy the warm weather. i bought this little sailor blouse a number of weeks ago with the intent of taking it with me on my upcoming trip to hawaii, but i got lucky and had the opportunity to take it for a spin just the other day. i occasionally like to mix things up and try new silhouettes and things, so i opted to pair it with some high rise trousers that are admittedly veering into harem pants territory, but i still enjoyed the overall effect. i wasn’t intentionally doing it, but i feel like these shapes are very ’90s. perhaps something that would have been sported by courtney cox or jennifer aniston circa friends. add the trench coat for some pink panther spy action and you’ve got my outfit.

p.s. are you loving my blue steel in that first photo? not sure what was going on there… i’ll just blame the cold meds and keep on enjoying this strange february sun!

today i stayed home sick from work. it’s just a cold, but it seriously won’t quit! so i thought i might share one of my more casual and cozy looks appropriate for those days when you’re feeling just slightly under the weather, but not completely out of commission. it also happens to be the outfit i wore on the plane ride home from nyc, which is probably where i contracted this nasty little bug.

in other news, i’ve been obsessed with these sepia tones lately. these pants are pretty much the perfect color. almost the same as my favorite color in the jumbo box of crayola colors: burnt sienna. i kid you not, that was my favorite crayon as a kid.

i’m sure you’ve heard me talk a lot about uniforms. i usually fall into a pattern of dressing in a handful of different combinations at any given point. this fall, it’s been all about the button-up shirt. either layered beneath a sweater and a jacket with jeans or a skirt, or worn beneath a little pinafore or jumper with tights and a coat. the look i’m sharing today is definitely an old standby for me. i just switch out the pieces for different colors, patterns, and textures. case in point: this look which is almost identical but with slightly different proportions and patterns. i think it’s kinda funny how i swing back and forth between these almost boyish casual looks and very cute and feminine ’60s-inspired mini dresses. but i suppose those are just the two moods i feel the most!

anyway, this is what i wore on sunday to drive down the peninsula to visit brendan’s family for a belated birthday party. we went shopping at the stanford mall (where i found an awesome pair of high rise jeans in a beautiful terra cotta color), and enjoyed home-made ice cream cake and chocolate coffee to celebrate!

outfit: kicking around town

calivintage: kicking around town

still kicking around my hometown of redlands for the holiday season. just enjoyed a lovely four day break at my grandma’s house with family eating tons of food and taking an excessive number of naps. i’m not ready to get back to “the real world” just yet, so i’m happy to be staying put in sunny southern california for another week before i have to go back to my normal life in san francisco. since i’m on a mini vacation, it’s only fitting that i packed a lot of very casual and comfortable clothes.

so this is what i wore while hanging around in the area where my aunt and uncle and cousins live in two houses next door to each other on a little dead end street across from the recycling center beneath the freeway off ramp. it’s a forgotten little spot in redlands that has been almost untouched by time as the old buildings decay, and where developers are probably just waiting to get their hands on the lots to build more strip malls and things. i never thought much about it while i lived here, but now when i come back to visit, i feel like i’m seeing the whole area with fresh eyes and i find myself wanting to take a million pictures to preserve my memories there.
