back pack

while on my quick trip in nyc, i’ve been thinking a lot about appropriate bags for lugging around all of my stuff! and while i know a backpack can get a bit warm, they’re certainly nice when you’ve got to carry around a big old camera, maps, an extra pair of shoes, a notepad, and all of the random items you might pick up on a shopping excursion, while still keeping your hands free so you can hail a cab or dig around in your pockets for subway fare. so a browsed around and found some fashionable bags so you can be a tourist without looking too much like one!

copenhagen street style: boquet de fleurs
definitely my favorite outfit this week, this girl has got the look down to her t. get it? yeaaah. anyway, i love the way she paired the cute vintage floral skirt with a simple t-shirt, round sunglasses, and cute summer sandals. definitely a nice way to keep cool and stylish in the hot weather.

altamira: beata holmgren
this outfit is amazing in it’s simplicity, but also in the key details that make it work. her dress has a subtle floral detail and who ever thought to layer a statement necklace over a scarf? yet it works so perfectly right down to her socks and oxfords.

l’atelier d’une fee: the village
you know me, a sucker for a cute girl on a bike! but i love that she wore a cute floral dress with nerdy glasses, and super tall oxford heels. it’s super feminine with just a touch of the masculine for good measure. i love it!

fancy things: holiday
i love the way she paired pink and baby blue. it’s a color combination i’ve never thought to try, but she definitely balances it out with more substantial brown leather accessories, but keeps it super pretty with a floral headband.

hoy fashion: topshop bandstand picnic
how cool is that little two piece? i’m going to assume it’s vintage because i’ve seen cute little sets like that in vintage shops before, but never dared to try them! but seeing how cool and breezy she looks with just a little teeny peep of skin has definitely got me thinking twice!

les mads: the turban
besides being a sucker for turbans, i also love her play on proportions here. the short cropped blouse paired with the high rise trousers create such a cool and relaxed look. definitely something to try.

bathing beauties

calivintage zelda sweetwater vintage reproduction inspired swimsuits swim suits bathing suits

a while back, i wrote a post about vintage-inspired swimsuits after getting several requests for some tips on where to find them. i pulled together some pictures of vintage bathing beauties and shared some of what i had found up until that point. but after recently browsing through the purple deer blog, i discovered a collection of vintage-inspired swimsuits that are truly amazing. these incredible swimsuits are designed by zelda sweetwater. and while the price tag certainly isn’t cheap, they are some of the most beautiful reproduction vintage suits i’ve seen out there. my two favorites are the pink strapless jane suit and the white one piece charlotte suit!

i also love that they showcased many of the suits on such a buxom babe! since i personally have fit issues with a lot of the swimsuits i’ve encountered in terms of support, it’s good to know that they can hold up! (though if you need something in a broader range of sizes, i still urge you to check out the selection at modcloth where they have extended sizes for their bathing beauty suit!)

i tell you, the more blogs i frequent each week, the harder it is for me to pick only 6 outfits to feature in my round up posts! but i suppose you can always see everything that’s inspiring me in an almost constant flow on my tumblr. and onto my favorites:trendy crew: carlota, sonar barcelona
ok, this lovely lady is wearing a lot of what i’m loving for summer: round sunglasses, cute little shorts, and ankle straps! i’ve only been getting into ankle strap wedges and platforms, but her cute little sandals have got me thinking about flats! much more casual and easy.

altamira nyc: tati cotlier

i’ll admit, this photo isn’t actually from this week, but it did make the rounds on tumblr and i fell in love. i’m really seeing the possibility of a cute little sweater like that, especially when paired with stripes, slacks, and cute little oxfords!

hoy fashion: topshop bandstand picnic
i have been really loving the outfits coming up on hoy fashion lately. there is just something so appealing to the easy simplicity of a cute 90’s dress with oxford boots and a loud pop of bright lipstick. i think this is appealing to my 10 year old self in some ways (you know, way back in 1993.)

team peter stigter: streetfashion paris menswear
i love this outfit because i find it so perfectly androgynous. the prim and proper button up oxford tucked in to those cute rolled up shorts with the best pair of oxfords i have ever seen and a clutch!? not to mention the great colors. it’s basically amazing.

hoy fashion: topshop bandstand picnic
another really simple, yet perfect outfit. i really like the fluffy, lacy cream dress with a denim jacket. and it reminds me that i don’t even have a denim jacket anymore. i think i need one asap.

mr. newton: the sundowner
and of course, i am collecting as many inspiring pictures of girls in scalloped shorts because they can be trick to style. this is actually blogger alma luna. i definitely like her cool pairing complete with a pretty headscarf as the topper!

three unexpected favorites

a couple weeks ago, i shared my top 3 favorite resort 2011 collections, even though all of the collections had yet to come out! i was just so enthusiastic about marc jacobs, erin fetherston, and stella mccartney, that i had to do a post about them as soon as i saw them! but now that i’ve seen everything that’s come out, i thought i would take a moment to share the rest of my favorites. and the most surprising part is that all 3 of these picks were collections that i rarely ever paid attention to before!

first up, pictured above is sonia rykiel resort 2011. the color palette was fresh and interesting and i loved the vintage-inspired rick rack details on shoes, belts, and dresses. the splashes of color on shoes, and the cute clutches and cross-body bags were the perfect accessories. and of course, you all know i’m hat crazy, so i loved the straw sailor hats!

another favorite was jason wu resort 2011. i love the mix of a proper, ladylike dresses with more playful school boy looks complete with big ascot ties, cute shorts, and those perfect little straw hats. the aesthetic is geek chic and vintage-inspired, something that is definitely right up my alley!

and probably the least expected favorite of the bunch was vena cava resort 2011. i would have easily passed it by, but i was won over by the wide brimmed straw hats. then, upon closer inspection, i realized how perfectly cool and wearable many of the looks are. there were cute little overalls, 80’s style dresses, zig zag details, and straw hats. the look is totally california and also something that can easily be recreated after a trip to the thrift shop!

ways to wear it

on the heels of my first experiment at remixing a single item four different ways, i thought it would be the perfect time to share a little swap i did with jessica of what i wore back in january. we were both feeling a little bored with our wardrobes, so we decided to send each other some clothes to change things up a bit, sorta like a mini style challenge. the only problem is that i sent her clothes that were a bit more appropriate for summer in new york, while i was getting away with styling them in the temperate california winter!

but now that it’s sweltering hot in nyc, i get to see how jess styled up a pair of vintage levi’s cut offs and a cute vintage dress. and i love how you can see the transition from winter to summer (and west coast to east coast) in these photos! i also think it’s really fun to see how someone would style up pieces from my own wardrobe.

hello mr. fox: coffee
i love the ease and simplicity of this perfect summer outfit. silk blouse, casual shorts, and perfect oxfords paired with a killer clutch and sweet round sunglasses. it’s pretty much the best summer uniform ever.

vanessa jackman: running with the fashpack, australian fashion week 2010
this lovely lady has such excellent styling. the belted short sleeved jacket is so right for when the temperatures drop in the evening and i love her straight skirt with socks and wedge booties. this is a perfect example of transitional dressing while we wait for the weather to actually get hot here in the bay area!

hanneli mustaparta: brighter days, darker colors
it’s official, this is going to be the year that i find myself a cute floral romper. it takes off the edge and keeps you from looking like you belong in shop class and it makes just the perfect statement so all you’ll need are cute oxfords and a simple belt.

froufrouu: patient, aware
this outfit is so dead on! i love the combination of high rise khakis with the over-sized hat and clutch. and i think i need to get myself a pair of neutral kork-ease wedges like that! so perfect paired with dark socks!

the stylish heart: green machine
her styling is just lovely, but it’s amazing how that perfect shade of green shorts take it to completely new territory. a reminder that a pop of color is in order for the summer.

hoy fashion: topshop bandstand picnic, liverpool
with all of the neutrals we’ve been seeing lately, i didn’t realize how fresh it could be to don a pair of white shorts with a white top. and she keeps it perfectly cool with classic sunglasses and a killer pair of oxfords.

les mads: peach strip
indeed. again with my love of breton stripes, only this one is even better! patches on the elbows and paired with a perfect peach silk skirt.

nast: lol
this lovely lady shoes us the perfect way to do casual oxfords. i love how she balances out the super comfy jacket with bright white jeans to keep things looking nice and refined.

yeye! style blog: quiet day
is this not the most adorable vintage 1930’s dress you have ever seen? the details are amazing. this is the kind of vintage find i hope to snag for myself one day!

lionheart vintage: blogging bummer denied!
such perfect use of color in this fun summery outfit. the romper and straw hat are perfect for hot days, and that amazing turquoise jacket is a great cover up for when it cools off in the evening.

vanessa jackman: running with the fash pack… australian fashion week 2010
another excellent use of color. i love every beautiful shade of rich blue, and the addition of those amazing chartreuse silk pants is pretty much perfect.

love more: stripes shirts and denim
and one more study in casual cool. note to self: find a sweater like that to throw over my chambray/skinny jeans uniform to take it up a notch!

teddy girls, part 2

after yesterday’s outfit post inspired by the teddy girls, i got a few requests for a post with some inspiration pictures. i had actually compiled a small collection, but didn’t post them because i wasn’t certain on all of the different image sources and i hate to post pictures without some sort of reference! but after some research, i believe that all of these photos were taken by ken russell, originally published in picture postmagazine in the summer of 1955. or at least this is what wikipedia tells me! (but please feel free to correct me if any of these have been misplaced!)
