vintage cycle chic

since i wasn’t around this sunday to do my usual cycle chic post for the week, i thought i’d pop in and share a little bit of fun bike inspiration with you today! rebecca of the clothes horse actually sent them to me in an email after she did some browsing of the photo archives on the nypl digital gallery. oh how i love public archives! anyway, while i certainly spend a lot of time browsing through images on the web and posting them to my tumblr, i realized that plenty of you guys probably do the same thing. so if you ever come across any fashionable cycling images, feel free to send them my way!

now onto these photos! i love how sassy and fun these vintage ladies look posing with their bikes. perhaps inspiration for a cycle chic photo shoot…

stylesightings: london style, simply chic…
i love the neutral dress paired with a wide belt, perfect red shoes, and that amazing haircut. she’s also reminding me to match my lip color to my shoes more often!

hoy fashion: liverpool, bold street
i love the way she paired the black and mesh with a pale floral and balanced it all out perfectly with brown shoes. definitely a good tip when you don’t want to look too precious in a floral print.

heart city vintage: outfit post
i’ve really been enjoying all of hannah’s outfit posts lately. she’s always got perfectly casual and wearable pieces, but she’s never boring. i love the beautiful colors on her floral skirt and the length has got me rethinking my need for mini skirts all the time. very well done!

nast: georgia, london
i like the fun print on her casual dress and the way she paired it with a very understated turban and black accessories. and she’s reminded me that i still have yet to try pairing socks with flats!

hoy fashion: liverpool, church street
ok, where can i find myself a killer pair of trousers in the perfect shade of baby blue? the color of her pants just takes the whole outfit up several notches. this is another reason why i need to remember to try more color!

melanie likes: angst
i’m a huge fan of all of melanie’s outfits. she has such a super cool way of pulling together all of her items with fun accessories and a bright lip color. and she makes me miss southern california, too!

oh marc, erin, and stella!

i don’t typically do round up posts for collections, but in my resort 2011 collection browsing, i’ve already fallen head over heels for so many collections that i figured i would begin already and show you my current favorites: marc jacobs, erin fetherston, and stella mccartney. i suppose this isn’t too much of a surprise since i’ve actually been enjoying all of their past collections for a few seasons now!

in my eyes, marc jacobs was basically a slam dunk. ever since he came out with that amazing spring 2009 collection with the tilted boaters, i’ve been straw hat obsessed. so his fresh take on the trend is getting me excited for my next trip to the thrift store. and of course, he brings out all of the best vintage-inspired details with contrast collars and plackets, polka dots, scalloped egdes on perfect dresses and wearable separates. win!

erin fetherston also came out with a perfectly wearable collection. in fact, i might venture to say that i wouldn’t mind having every single piece to mix and match in my wardrobe. i love the giant ascot bows and sweetheart bustlines in the simple black, nude, and red color palette. and of course, she’s got pretty straw hats with polka dots accents, too. is it any wonder that i am in love?

another collection that i quite enjoyed was stella mccartney. she had a little splash of everything: giant botanical prints, lace and scallops, menswear inspired suit sets, and fun proportion play. but somehow, even with the drastic mix of ideas going on, she pulled it together into a fun and cohesive spring collection full of inspiration.

do you have any resort favorites yet?

trendy crew: rebecca, primavera sound barcelona
one of the things that’s most inspiring to me about this particular outfit is her use of color. i don’t know why i would never think to combine those two shades of blue and green, but it is so artful and fresh to me! and of course this makes me really want a perfect vintage romper!yishyene: listening to justin beiber as i type this.. nooo
i love the romantic combination of lace tights with a pretty floral tempered by tough boots and seductive fur! this outfit is a total win.

team peter stigter
i really love the way this is basically a simple and preppy casual look: it’s an oxford blouse with a sweater and jacket, but it’s a good reminder that you can still have a bit of fun with printed jeans. i may not go for the checkerboard pattern, but i could see trying this with a pair of fun floral jeans!

fashion forestry: trendy friday hidden prettiness
i have to tell you, i’m pretty much crazy about every single outfit this darling wears! she clearly has the most amazing and quirky vintage wardrobe of anyone i know. this is actually one of her more toned down looks, but i just love that amazing dress with a pretty pink topper.

curious fancy
i was tipped off to this new blog by one of my favorite vintage sellers and tumblr ladies, lisa zain of vintage shoe love. i can’t get over her perfect romper paired with those sweet mary janes. perfect summer simplicity!

easy fashion: karen, rue tiquetonne, paris
this lovely lady is making me have second thoughts about transitioning to a pixie cut. she has the perfect bob! and i love her inky palette with thick rimmed glasses and beautiful layers. you can’t notice at first, but she’s added tons of texture and interest in the little details. just check out those serious gloves.

the pixie

i must say, i am long overdue for a trim to my pixie cut! one thing about having a very short cut is that it requires a lot of maintenance to keep it at the perfect length, since only a small amount of growth will make a big difference. but the daily care is quite simple since it usually requires very minimal styling, if any, and you’ll be sure to have a healthy head of hair since there are only a few inches of it!

so since i’m thinking of just exactly how i should trim my hair, i thought i would post some lovely inspiration of the classic pixie cut. i think it’s easy to think that all pixie cuts were created equal, but as you can see, there are plenty of interesting variations on the look. now i just have to decide which direction to take!

above: i can no longer remember the source on the top two images, but i believe they’re both by the sartorialist, michelle williams, audrey tautou, cecilia mendez, and a bumble & bumble cut.

carried away

i know i promised my guide to buying used and vintage bikes, but it’s taking me a bit longer than i expected to find actual pictures of all of my bike picks, so while i keep working on that post behind-the-scenes, i decided to share some cool bike accessories with you on this cycle chic saturday. after writing this post about my favorite fashionable mixte and dutch style bikes under a grand, i discovered another company called public bikes, which has become a fast favorite! they were a sponsor of bike to work day here in the bay area, so naturally, i had to check them out. i was quite delighted to discover that not only do they have a beautiful selection of fashionable and functional bikes, but they also have a really great web shop with lots of nice bike accessories!

in particular, i am loving their range of nice baskets and bags. the rear basket has a quick release with a handle, so it doubles as your shopping basket on quick trips to the grocery store. in addition, they have really lovely brooks roll up panniers, and a canvas pannier that doubles as a messenger bag! and for those of you concerned with safety, i quite like their sleek nutcase helmets.

all the pretty birds: mimosas in her garden
this is seriously the most perfect outfit and probably my favorite of the week. simple silk blouse with floral shorts, oxfords, and a seriously cool pair of sunnies. i die!

stockholm street style: sania
again with the floral shorts! (hint: i just ordered a pair for myself and am thinking of ways to style them.) i like her quirky cool look and of course i gotta love the jessica simpson charles anastase knockoffs. i got a hint from one of my readers that they’ll be replenishing stock in july….!

face hunter: saint petersburg aurora fasion week
since writing my post about floral headpieces a few days ago, i feel like i’m noticing them everywhere. which is perfect because it means more inspiration for when i finally get one for myself. i love the simple combo here: sweet, but not over the top at all.

clothes, cameras, and coffee: lady sing the blues so well
i can thank rebecca for posting a few outfits from this blog on her tumblr. i pretty much instantly added her to my blog reader because all of her outfits and shots are too stunning for words. this looks like an editorial in a magazine!

leproust vintage: under the influence volume 1 (la, la, la, la, la)
ok, how can you not love an outfit inspired by daria? i love kristen’s cool and modern take on the classic grunge outfit complete with the perfect pair of round sunnies!

stylesightings: modern dandy
this lady is rocking the menswear look so hard! from the cool bowler hat, to the perfect trench and that amazing pair of silk striped pants. she really makes me want to go all out and get in touch with my masculine side.

flowers in her hair

since loulou loves you recently came out with a set of pretty floral headbands, i’ve been dying to get my hands on one! and while i know she would highly recommend that you go pick one up from her shop, my budget isn’t allowing me to do so at this moment. so i think i might have to go out and do the next best thing and do it myself! so i went back through my archives and plucked a few of my favorite images of girls with flowers in their hair as inspiration for a little project. all you’d need are a few supplies from a local craft shop: wire, florists tape, and an assortment of synthetic flowers. easier said than done, i know! so while i’m trying to turn thought into actions, i’ll admire these lovely photos.

anna karina, loulou in one of her creations, pandora, alexanne, from the film sedmikrasky (i highly recommend!), kelly shoestrings.

coming around

as a little follow up to yesterday’s post about vintage inspired swimwear, i thought i’d share some of the images i’ve been collecting over the past several months of the perfect round sunnies. once again, the sun refuses to come out and play, so i’ve had to seek refuge indoors, in front of the computer screen waiting for summer and planning out all the outfits i’d wear if the weather was warm and sunny. sounds like someone needs a vacation!

dive right in

with all of the gloomy weather we’ve been having this spring, it’s hard to imagine that summer is right around the corner! but looking at photos of awesome vintage swimwear and browsing for vintage inspired suits is certainly getting me in the mood! i’m sure some of you have seen these vintage photos before, but for those of you who haven’t, they’re all by the photographer nina leen for life magazine in the 1950’s. i recently found them via my vintage vogue.
