to enter, simply visit curator and leave a comment in the section below telling us which item is your absolute favorite.

this contest is open to readers within the united states. only one entry per person. winner will be randomly selected and contacted via email on tuesday, february 7. winner will receive a $250 gift card to curator shop.

outfit: casual

i’m sure you’ve heard me talk a lot about uniforms. i usually fall into a pattern of dressing in a handful of different combinations at any given point. this fall, it’s been all about the button-up shirt. either layered beneath a sweater and a jacket with jeans or a skirt, or worn beneath a little pinafore or jumper with tights and a coat. the look i’m sharing today is definitely an old standby for me. i just switch out the pieces for different colors, patterns, and textures. case in point: this look which is almost identical but with slightly different proportions and patterns. i think it’s kinda funny how i swing back and forth between these almost boyish casual looks and very cute and feminine ’60s-inspired mini dresses. but i suppose those are just the two moods i feel the most!

anyway, this is what i wore on sunday to drive down the peninsula to visit brendan’s family for a belated birthday party. we went shopping at the stanford mall (where i found an awesome pair of high rise jeans in a beautiful terra cotta color), and enjoyed home-made ice cream cake and chocolate coffee to celebrate!

i know i don’t usually share my modcloth blog posts here at calivintage, but i just couldn’t resist sharing my latest post: one tweed coat, three ways. i’d had my eye on that coat for a while, but wasn’t quite certain if it would work for me. so of course, i decided to order three of them and play dress up with some of my coworkers for my latest styling post. it was an absolute pleasure to pull together and shoot all three of the looks. makes me think perhaps i should do it a bit more often!

anyway, you can check out details shots and shop the looks here. and while i’m at it, if you’re interested, you can take a peek at all of my latest posts at modcloth by clicking here.

lauren moffatt spring 2012

YS124A

you may remember back in september, i shared a little sneak peek at lauren moffatt spring 2012 collection and some behind-the-scenes photos of her studio. fast forward a few months, and the first pieces are hitting her store and i’m more excited than ever to show you the looks! the first few looks were instant favorites. the yellow sequins on the looks above and below are actually tiny pastel flowers! with these pieces, it’s all about the intricate details. lace and crochet and vintage-inspired fabrics for days. i’m also particularly smitten with the scalloped print silk dress in cream and green. she also brought back some really beautiful swimwear and plenty of beach cover-ups to go with them! the whole collection feels so light and breezy and perfect for beachy fun…

and you can shop the collection on her site right now!

trend: beret baby

berets

call it what you will: an emerging trend, a classic that’s never gone out of style, or just another accessory that’s been catching my eye lately, but there’s just something about the beret that’s been calling my name! they’ve been popping up on blogs and street style sites a lot these days as a perfect little winter topper. the funny thing is that i don’t think i have ever even worn a beret in my entire life, but seeing all of these photos around the web has got me quickly changing my tune.

above: street style by tokyo faces, street style by all the pretty birds, street style by the sartorialist, meg of don juan’s reckless daughter, toshiko of it’s not her, it’s me, and marie photographed by glamcanyon.

might i also add that this trend has recently been spotted on some of our fanciest felines friends? that’s right, behold the wonders of cat atelier:

weekend away

calivintage: weekend away

this past weekend i celebrated my 29th birthday. i’m not one to make a big fuss or throw a wild party, and i’ve very specifically informed all of my closest friends that i do not like surprises. instead, i prefer to take the opportunity to ease into my new year on a relaxing weekend away. it’s actually become a bit of a birthday tradition for me. and this year, we drove three hours north to a little town called gualala along the california coast, to stay in a beautiful beach house at st. orres overlooking the ocean complete with everything you could possibly need: expansive views, a cozy fireplace, a sauna, and a jacuzzi overlooking the water.

the beginning of the trip was just a bit tumultuous. the forecast threatened rain and thunderstorms, and we found ourselves driving through winding country roads when the gas light started blinking. past the point of no return, we meandered along the hilly terrain for 50 miles until we finally popped out on the coast to be greeted by a service station. the entire time, we were doing our best not to imagine what it would be like to find ourselves stranded in the middle of a thunderstorm on a windy one lane road without cell phone reception. but our fears were for naught because we we made it out alive with .2 gallons of gas left in the tank, and a bright blue sky with the sun continuing to shine as we explored the area before heading to the house for a very pleasant evening (see photos).

the next morning wasn’t quite so kind, but it was honestly just as beautiful. i woke up obscenely early to look out at the ocean and watch the waves crash along the shore while big grey clouds filled the sky and it began to rain. and it pretty much rained for the rest of the day, foiling our plans to explore the nature areas, but certainly not stopping us from enjoying a few indoor activities like breakfast in bed, naps, and more sauna time. on the way back, we drove along the coast and reminisced about our bike tour, almost amazed that a couple of years ago, we actually rode that entire stretch of highway one on our bikes.

all in all, it was a weekend i will not soon forget!

it’s currently pouring rain outside, and as you can see, vivetta spring 2012 is the perfect solution to a rainy day. i can’t get enough of the watermelon and citrus slice motifs mixed with pastel picnic plaids and nautical themes. it’s got me dreaming about spring and summer and hawaiian vacations and fresh fruits and picnics. in fact, i have a serious hankering for that pretty lemon collar dress!

season after season, vivetta comes up with some of the most whimsical, playful, and experimental pieces. she is, after all, the woman who designed this cat skirt!

outfit: 90s dad

calivintage: 90s dad

perhaps it has to do with that fact that we’re currently in the midst of men’s fashion week, but for whatever reason, i’ve been digging the menswear lately. yesterday i wrote about p. johnson tailors and today i’m dressed (kinda) like a dude. i call it my dad outfit, so it was pretty appropriate that when i asked brendan if i fit the bill, he said i looked like chevy chase. especially since my idea of what a dad looks like is mostly some weird amalgamation of my own dad and dads i’ve seen in goofy 90s movies. personally i think i look a bit more like rick moranis. either way, the look definitely called for a pair of high rise pleated khaki shorts, which i hadn’t worn in almost two years! for some reason, over the past couple of years, i’ve really shied away from shorts. something about those itsy bitsy inseams makes me feel a bit overexposed, which is rather silly when you consider the length of most of my skirts (see monday’s post). so with a bit of encouragement from my coworkers who razzed me when i told them that i don’t like shorts, i decided to pull this pair out from the depths of my closet. last time i wore them was here and here. perhaps it’s time for a bit of a shorts revival! and a 90s movie marathon!
