samantha pleet fall 2012

samantha pleet fall 2012

amidst my recent stint at fashion week to preview fall collections, and all of the new spring pieces just arriving in stores, i feel like i’ve seen so many beautiful collections that i can hardly keep up! but while i may be scrambling to see them all, i still think it’s important to pause and appreciate them, too! so today i’d like to share the samantha pleet fall 2012 collection. as you can tell by their golden halos, this collection was inspired by the work of pre-raphaelite painters.

“the house-designed prints are ominous and brilliant, and the palette has a jewel-like transparency that carries the collection from light to dark.”

i love the way she played with cut-outs and high contrast elements balanced out with luxurious fabrics for a dramatic and romantic effect. all the while keeping the collection absolutely wearable for every day.

isn’t this always the way it goes? the moment the weather gets crazy nice (read: 70 degrees and up in february), i come down with a cold that just won’t quit. but when you get sick with this damn virus, there’s not much you can do but wait it out. so i’ve been making the best of it by alternating between long naps and short stints outside to enjoy the warm weather. i bought this little sailor blouse a number of weeks ago with the intent of taking it with me on my upcoming trip to hawaii, but i got lucky and had the opportunity to take it for a spin just the other day. i occasionally like to mix things up and try new silhouettes and things, so i opted to pair it with some high rise trousers that are admittedly veering into harem pants territory, but i still enjoyed the overall effect. i wasn’t intentionally doing it, but i feel like these shapes are very ’90s. perhaps something that would have been sported by courtney cox or jennifer aniston circa friends. add the trench coat for some pink panther spy action and you’ve got my outfit.

p.s. are you loving my blue steel in that first photo? not sure what was going on there… i’ll just blame the cold meds and keep on enjoying this strange february sun!

my nyfw: polyvore live video!

just wanted to share this adorable video from the polyvore live event last week. if you didn’t catch my coverage from the show, you can see my photos here. and if you somehow missed it after all of my posts (sorry, i’m excited!), then you can watch the runway show here.

outfit: sepia tones

calivintage: sepia tones

today i stayed home sick from work. it’s just a cold, but it seriously won’t quit! so i thought i might share one of my more casual and cozy looks appropriate for those days when you’re feeling just slightly under the weather, but not completely out of commission. it also happens to be the outfit i wore on the plane ride home from nyc, which is probably where i contracted this nasty little bug.

in other news, i’ve been obsessed with these sepia tones lately. these pants are pretty much the perfect color. almost the same as my favorite color in the jumbo box of crayola colors: burnt sienna. i kid you not, that was my favorite crayon as a kid.

my nyfw: jill stuart fall 2012

IMG_8664

i know that nyfw ended last week, but i still have a few posts that i’d like to share with you over the next couple of days to round out all of my coverage from the shows! so today i’d like to share some of the photos i snapped at the jill stuart fall 2012 show. her beautiful spring collection made me weak in the knees, so i had my hopes set high when the lights went out and the crowd hushed as we waited for the latest looks to walk down the runway. i have to say, i was a bit surprised to see such dark and edgy looks after so many very feminine collections, but as more looks emerged, i started to settle into the new direction. and when the final few looks with there intricate embroidery, pretty collars, and cut out details, i fell in love.

please note that these photos were taken by me and were originally posted on the modcloth blog. please only repost with proper credit!

outfit: home again

calivintage: home again

after yesterday’s recap from the polyvore live runway show featuring a very glammed-up version of myself, i thought it would only be fitting for me to squeeze in a long overdue outfit photo so you guys don’t forget what i usually look like! i was in new york solo, so i didn’t have my photographer boyfriend around to take pictures of my outfits. and in a way, it was nice to have a little break from my usual blogging routine. in fact, i usually have the most fun when i get to spend my time behind the lens.

having said that, i’m still getting dressed every day, so here is what i wore on saturday for a chill day involving a very long nap followed by an unexpectedly fruitful trip to tj maxx where i scored a very witchy marc by marc jacobs black lace dress, a nice equipment trench coat, and a cute pair of vintage-inspired mary jane heels. and of course, after all of that bargain hunting, we rewarded ourselves with a trip to lanesplitters for pizza and beer before heading home for a night of watching movies on the couch. it was pretty much the perfect transition back home after such a hectic trip, but apparently it wasn’t enough to fully recharge my batteries. i woke up sunday morning with a terrible sore throat and spent the rest of my weekend under the covers. but at least i got in a few hours of fun before i went down!

my nyfw: polyvore live recap!

IMG_9879

i’ve been home from nyfw for a couple of days, mostly recovering from nearly two weeks with little to no sleep (yikes!), but also having tons of fun going back through the hundreds (ok, thousands) of photos i took during my trip. and of course, one of the most exciting experiences from nyfw was the opportunity to walk the runway for the polyvore live event!

we arrived at the venue at 12:30pm to start the process of transforming ourselves from fashion bloggers to “models” for the day. prior to the event, i had been taking photos backstage at several runway shows to get a peek at the hair and makeup before the shows, so it was quite a role reversal to find myself sitting in the chair getting primped and pampered by cover girl, sarah potempa, and tenoverten. and as you can see from the photos, i was barely recognizable after a full head of extensions and a very fancy updo with sultry makeup and a very glamorous dress designed by celestino. it was a surreal experience, to say the least, and i am so happy to have been a part of the event! it was tons of fun to play a model for the day and to try something completely new, though i definitely think i’ll be keeping my day job, haha! a big thank you to everyone who participated in the event!

if you missed the live stream, you can still watch the full video right here. (it’s a long video, so if you’re curious, i walk the runway at around the 23:36 mark!)
