outfit: lacy days

calivintage: lacy days

all last week was busy and exhausting. there are two ways that you can respond to such a situation: 1) you can go home, feel sorry for yourself, and eat a tub of ice cream in front of the tube, or 2) fuck it! throw all common sense out the window, forget your routine, and just do something different. i opted for the latter. on one such weeknight, i threw on my fancy new party dress, and went out on the town. since the sun was just setting, i took the opportunity to show off said fancy dress with a little photo shoot on the secret stairway near my house, then headed off on my evening adventure. the week was long and busy, but sometimes you just gotta live it up and let off some steam.

these photos were taken for part two of my guest post series over at dahlia uk. you can see my first post here.

orla kiely fall 2012 campaign

it’s official: i’m ready for the fall. after spotting the orla kiely fall 2012 campaign shot by venetia scott, i am officially obsessed. these super sixties-inspired looks need to be in my closet right now. from the cute coats and pinafores perfect for layering to the expert styling with cream tights and little t-strap shoes, i just can’t get enough! that is all.

tocca fall 2012

continuing with the fall trend this week, i decided to share the tocca fall 2012 collection. i’m absolutely smitten with this very chic set of looks that elegantly ride the line between masculine and feminine. i think this collection speaks to me so much because i often find myself dressing much in the same manner. one day i’ll be wearing a little ’60s dress and then next day i’ll be sporting a button-up blouse with pants and loafers. add in some delicate details like intricate lace and some decidedly academic inspiration and you’ve got a perfect formula for fall dressing.

beach day

oh, babes of the internet, how i love you. yesterday this fun editorial popped up in my feed, a photo series styled by leeanne and photographed by alexis lambrou for rookie magazine. and it features none other than emily, emma, and leeanne herself!  i’ve interacted with these ladies through the marvels of modern technology for some time know, chatting it up in virtual spaces like instagram, tumblr, and facebook. i’ve even had the pleasure of spending a teeny bit of time with them while visiting new york back in february. it’s kind of strange how you can feel like you know some people so well, even when they are so far away. but i am happy to see these lovely faces doing awesome things like setting up fun photo shoots on trips to the beach in places that i’ve never been before. and it’s getting me just a little bit excited to make my way back to new york in september to enjoy the last of the summer sunsets of the year.

i was feeling nostalgic the other day and happened upon these photos of me as a kid. i actually shared some of these a looong while back, but pictures are meant to be rediscovered again and again throughout a lifetime, and sometimes it’s good to dwell on those memories for just a few moments. i love the fact that i went through such a long phase in which i refused to smile for photos. there are actually professional studio photos of me grimacing and pouting in a pink frilly dress. despite the photographer’s attempts, i refused to give in and crack a smile, so my mom had them printed. good thing she had a sense of humor.

also note that my hair is an absolute mess in those first two photos. that fancy haircut was the result of an incident in which i got a huge wad of gum stuck in my hair and attempted to get it out myself. niiiice.

back to school

back to school

all of this talk about the chilly weather at outside lands over the weekend got me thinking about the fact that it is now officially august, and i have to accept that the days are getting shorter and we are slowly transitioning into the fall. it’s back-to-school season and even though i’m no longer a student, i still sometimes feel that little nostalgic ache remembering those trips to the store for freshly sharpened pencils and fragrant packs of crayons. as i got older, i graduated to graphing calculators and laptop computers, but it was always fun to gear up for the school season no matter how hard it might have been to say goodbye to summer.

pair that with a healthy dose of crazy cat lady kitsch and you’ve arrived at my slightly off-kilter outfit inspiration for the coming season!

behind the lens: festival style at outside lands

calivintage: festival style at outside lands

over the weekend, i had the opportunity to attend outside lands to shoot festival style in collaboration with free people. i spent three days with julia, their senior writer, wandering the festival grounds in search of cute girls sporting chic festival style.  if you venture over to the free people blog you can see my photos from day one, day two, and day three of the festival.

but as a little bonus, i actually managed to snap so many photos that i was able to save a little set to share with you here as well! i read in the news that there were over 200,000 people in attendance at the festival. and it was certainly fun to have the pleasure of people-watching for those three long days, so here are a few more looks that caught my eye among the crowds.

despite the record-breaking warm temperatures in most of the bay area, if you found yourself heading a few miles west to golden gate park for the outside lands festival over the weekend, then you found yourself wrapped in a blanket of fog. or if you were me, wrapped in a blanket dress. leaving oakland each morning sweating in the bright shining sun, it was hard for me to contemplate the fact that my destination would be so chilly. i spent three days at the festival shooting street style for free people, so it was important for me to dress comfortably while still maintaining enough movement to chase after cute festival-goers with my camera in hand. i recently picked up this little quilted number with the intention of saving it for the warm fall months, but the fickle san francisco weather offered me an opportunity to wear it right away. it might be a little dress, but the thick quilted layers kept me warm enough for forgo a heavy jacket for most of the day, kinda like the vintage version of those little down vests that people wear while camping. and the fun pattern coupled with the ascot tie and ankle boots made me feel a bit like robin hood. all i needed was a little feathered cap, ha! certainly appropriate for traipsing around in the lush forested golden gate park!

bbq baby

calivintage: bbq baby

today i thought i’d share a set of personal photos taken on my trip to visit family in southern california last month. as is the tradition for most family gatherings, we all go to my grandma’s house and fire up the grill to bbq steak, burgers, or hotdogs which we enjoy with baked beans and my grandma’s famous potato salad. i love how looking back at these photos, our cool shades of white and blue make us look like we aren’t breaking a sweat leaning over the hot grill in 100 degree weather, haha. during the middle of summer in redlands, highs easily reach up to 110 or more, so it gets pretty brutal standing over the hot grill. but we set up the chairs under a shady tree in anticipation of the delicious outcome.

above, my brother let me do the honors of grilling the steak.

the simplest of outfits are required to keep cool. i’m wearing a cotton seersucker american apparel sun dress and vintage navy salvatore ferragamo vara flats.

lauren moffatt fall 2012

you may remember back in february, i shared photos from the lauren moffatt fall 2012 presentation during nyfw. fast forward a few months and the complete lookbook is out with many of the pieces from the fall collection now available online. the collection is huge and there really is something for everyone, with pieces easily transitioning from the cooler fall months and on into chilly winter weather. picking a favorite is nearly impossible, though i am partial to some of the easy shift dresses, and am particularly smitten with a certain red and mustard yellow sweater with little “lm” initials on the sleeve. i just love the varied textures from breezy printed silks to thick wool to eyelet fabrics and sequin details. if you want to take a look at the complete collection, then head on over to lauren moffatt!
