uttu

one of my favorite things about the internet is the ease with which we’re able to connect with others, even if we are miles away. such was my experience when i received a lovely message from GÁ¶kÁ§e Á‡Ä±bık, the designer behind istanbul-based brand, uttu. the moment i laid eyes on the beautiful lookbook photos, i knew i was in for a treat! the premiere collection is filled with all of the beautiful, vintage-inspired details that i love. i love the high-rise shorts, peter pan collars, and eyelet details, all lovingly handmade in istanbul.

more than a feeling swarovski giveaway

calivintage + polyvore + swarovski

today i am decked out in my most romantic getup in honor of my latest partnership with polyvore + swarovski as a host of the more than a feeling contest. and the feeling of the day is love. when i think of love, i immediately picture all of those silly romantic and indulgently excessive things in life, like flowers and chocolates and lace and cake! so what could be more fitting than pulling on a lacy dress to prance around in the rose garden? whenever i stroll through this particular park near my house, there always seems to be some fun photo shoot going on for engagements, weddings, sweet sixteens, or just because. little girls with flowers in their hair, or couples giggling as the photographer directs them to gaze into each other’s eyes. it may be a silly sight, but we all have to indulge in our romantic side every once in a while.

if you’re feeling romantic, then swarovski wants to know: what do you wear to express your love? create a polyvore collage inspired by this sappy sentiment (see my example below) to be entered for a chance to win the swarovski emoti love. i’ll be looking through all of the entries and judging the winner, so i can’t wait to see what you all come up with.  click here to enter!

calivintage: dahlia uk

today i’m excited to announce that i will be guest contributing to the dahlia uk blog for the next few months! i have long been a fan of their feminine and playful designs, so it was a pleasure when they asked me if i’d like to contribute! for my first guest post, i picked out this prim and proper navy shift dress with a little embellished collar. it vaguely reminds me of the dresses that the nuns used to wear when i went to catholic school as a little girl, so i thought i’d have some fun with it and add a floral crown in the spirit of some of my favorite religious iconography. throw in a pastel bag (this new mint purse has been hanging on my arm almost every day lately), and you’re ready for an evening stroll to the cemetery. not kidding, these shots were snapped on the way to the mountain view cemetery near my house, but by the time we got there, the last of the sun had set and the gates were closed for the evening.

feline fine

it’s been a while since i’ve done a girls + cats post, so i thought i’d repost this little piece i wrote on the modcloth blog last week featuring some of my favorite cat-inspired accessories! if you follow me in various outlets around the web, then you know it’s no secret that i’m pretty much a crazy cat lady. i recently decided to just go with it, and have been slowly collecting a little army of cat clothes and accoutrement.

paule ka fall 2012

most of the collections that i share on this blog definitely lean towards wearability, but that doesn’t mean that i’m not attracted to the more fanciful collections out there. case in point: the paule ka fall 2012 collection. it’s certainly not the world’s most practical, but that’s just why i love it! the wild silhouettes, the mix of colors, the fun little details like fuzzy shoe clips and wicker basket bags. i love the 1960s sensibility and i love the inspiration for the collection. according to style.com, the collection was inspired by the idea of a clique of english girls who have stolen their rich parents’ credit cards, raided the closets, and are headed out for an adventure. the designer called it a mix of “rich and poor,” which you can certainly see from the blend of mismatched colors with luxurious details like fur and jewels. the whole story is certainly a fantasy i wouldn’t mind living, especially if i got to wear a few pieces from this fun collection.

carven resort 2013

i know i’m a little late in the game sharing this collection, but i loved the carven resort 2013 collection so much that i just had to share it here. my obsession with the brand really solidified last year when they released their 2012 resort collection with that incredible acid yellow pinafore and those darling little bow flats, leading me to dig deep into my pockets and actually invest in a designer piece. in my world, these collections are reserved for inspiration only, but carven is just so perfect that i find myself counting pennies trying to figure out how i will afford another piece! the color combinations are amazing, and the shapes and silhouettes add even more interest.

behind the lens: calivintage for modcloth lookbook

calivintage: modcloth shoot

speaking of photography, after yesterday’s post, i realized that i never shared a very exciting project that i worked on last month! as some of you know, i work at modcloth as an editorial specialist, but one facet of my job that i don’t talk much about is that i do a bit of photography on the side. many of the photos you see on the modcloth blog featuring beauty, craft, and cooking projects, have also been shot by me. so when the team was working on a campaign a while back, they asked if i’d be interested in working on a bigger project, and that’s how i ended up shooting some of the photos for modcloth’s “adventures in style” campaign. the silly thing is that i really should have shared this while the campaign was still up on the site, because now you can’t see it there, but perhaps you were shopping at modcloth last month and saw some of my work!

anyway, the models are two of my lovely co-workers: sam is a graphic designer and angela is a marketing writer. and we were accompanied by annie who is our creative stylist, and the person who worked with them to put together the outfits. since i’d never really been the official photographer on a real photo shoot, i was a little nervous knowing that my work would be plastered all over such a big site, but i was actually quite happy with the way it turned out!

life lately

calivintage: eat

yesterday i meant to share a blog post, but you know? sometimes life happens. as was the case yesterday when i slept-in past my alarm clock, conveniently on a day that i was supposed to arrive to work early! i threw on a t-shirt and jeans (it was mandatory for a work-related event), pulled my hair into a ponytail, and managed to answer a few emails before making my way through rush hour traffic into the corporate lot where i park my car before heading into the office.

and this morning, when i was going through the photos i’d taken over the weekend, i realized that i only took photos of one outfit, but i had tons of photos of other things. i’ve noticed lately that i spend a lot more of my time behind the camera than in front of it, playing with the settings and trying to capture little bits and pieces of my life. these photos were taken after a trip to the farmer’s market that’s held every saturday a few blocks from my home filled with gourmet food trucks, organic fruits and veggies, and hand-crafted housewares. we picked up a few ingredients for an afternoon snack, a salad that i recreated off the menu at darwin cafe: fresh kale, radicchio, balsamic vinegar, lemon, parmesan, and little bits of prociutto. it sounds fancy, but it’s really just a simple salad.
